Telewest/Blueyonder problems with Linksys WAG54GS
 

Hey,

I bought a wireless router for my pc so me and my other half dont have to argue over the internet.

Everything was going fine, until I realised that the router was not seeing an internet connection (my default connection to blueyonder) Now When blueyonder was installed we were given a Motorola SurfBoard cable/usb modem.

The Modem I have, isnt just a normal connection, its a metal screw thing (dont I sound clever) so when the manual said connect the wall phone jack, it makes things a little difficult.

Now what ever I do I cannot get the internet to show up on the router, Yet when my other half searched for the wireless connection, it was there, he could log on, yet it wouldnt let him access any internet pages.

If anyone could help ASAP please do

Unfortunately the WAG54GS is a combined ADSL modem with router. That just will not work on cable broadband. Cable and ADSL are different connectivity technologies.

You need to take the thing back and acquire a wireless broadband router, the Linksys WRT54GS will do just fine.

The only difficulty then might be the cable modem you have. You say it is USB (the connection between modem and PC). Is there an ethernet port as an alternative. Unless there is an ethernet port you will not successfully connect the cable modem to the modem.

well the pc doesnt actually have an ethernet port, but I do have an eternet usb adapter.... Would that make any difference or would I need a card?

Id go and get yourself an ethernet car for a start off, about £9.99 from PC world or £3 - 4 online. It also sounds to me like you have brought the right router. The Linksys WAG354G does have a modem built in and I would expect it behave in the same way as the one you brought but in contrast to the above poster I disagree that it can not be used for cable connections, as the WAG354G can and it is from the same family. As I use the WAG354G.

What I suggest you do is if you need a modem to connect and I expect your blueyonder box is a modem then ditch it but make sure you know you user name and password. Then connect from the wall into the modem and enter the set up menu http://192.168.1.1 (I think thats right), enter all your info and save settings and hopefully you should be getting somewhere.

A good start would be making 100% sure if you are on ADSL or Cable?

:confused: Yes you could use the WAG354G as a wirless access point between wired and wireless networks, You could even connect up to 4 PCs together wired.

What I can't see is how you would get it to work as a router on cable, since there router function is wired to the ADSL modem, and you can't bypass that? For the device to operate as a router, and thus allow the internet connection to be shared a modem has to be connected on the WAN side of the device and the computers on the LAN side. The only WAN connection is the ADSL port, expecting to wire into the telephone network, not cable.

NB. WAN = Wide area network - the connection to the internet side, LAN = Local area network- the computers you have connected up in your house.

As for the USB to ethernet adaptor, those usually work by converting ethernet to USB rather than USB to ethernet, and thus probably wont suceed in passing your cable modem's signal from the modem to the router's WAN port.

WAG354G has a modem, wireless device and 4 port hub built in. It also has an ethernet port for a cable connection so can be used with cable or ADSL.

WANs and LANs have nothing really to do with the router in this context unless you start getting into BUS, RING etc etc networks. Which again is not needed.

Fair enough, reading the manufacturer's blurb I saw no way of bypassing the built in ADSL modem to connect the WAN side to the cable modem, but you've obviously found a way ;)

My explaination of WAN and LAN was really aimed at the OP of the thread, for whom I was assuming little knowledge.
