router problems ... Safecom

I bought a Safecom AP/Router (802.11g) and the instruction leaflet claims '...use this router with NTL, Telewest and Blueyonder...' The person installing the wirless system could not get the router 'talking to' the modem (Motorola from Telewest). My question is: has anyone used this particular model? If so, any problems? Or would I be better advised to go for e.g. Linksys WRT54G or ... any other suggestions? I should add that a similar Safecom model worked previously for a short while, then it suddenly stopped after only 2 weeks and could not be reactivated. I think it is a hardware problem. Unfortunately I was not involved in the setting up but could get precise information if required.

Do you have the model number?
Is it this one and did you follow the install guide from start to finish?
Safecom

Did you use the right type of ethernet cable? Depending upon the router & CM used you'll either need to use straight through (normal ethernet) or crossed (x-over ethernet cable).

The following page explains...

You can buy both types of cable from any computer shop for a few pounds.

If it was working then stopped a common reason for this is accidently clicking the uplink button in/out on the router/switch, effectively changing the type of cable it needs to work. Check to see if you have an uplink switch and if so make sure it is set correctly...

Good luck.

If I'm looking at the same model it autosenses whether the cable is cross over or not, so I don't think there is any button to press.

In that case, maybe the auto-sensing is faulty!?

I think the easiest thing to do is to try a different router. eBuyer sell a real cheap 802.11g/4 port one for about £25 that's had 69 +ve reviews (I've never used it myself). For that price it's worth buying to test with. If it solves the problem keep it, if not send it back.

Many thanks for your advice. I have taken it all in and the bottom line is that the laptop is now connected wirelessly but only intermittently, it disconnects automatically after a few minutes. I even had problems initially connecting my PC back to the internet, after disconnecting the router and that is an easy procedure, normally. The mystery deepens.
