Pings increase?
Hey,
I used to recieve pings of 14 - 15 a few weeks ago since I joined ntl its been fine for the past few days, which is great for gaming however I now recieve pings of 40 and above at peak times... Heres a tracert: C:\>tracert www.jolt.co.uk Tracing route to www.jolt.co.uk [82.133.85.65] over a maximum of 30 hops: 1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.0.1 2 6 ms 8 ms 5 ms 10.157.164.1 3 8 ms 8 ms 7 ms midd-t2cam1-a-v110.inet.ntl.com [213.106.238.57] 4 8 ms 8 ms 7 ms midd-t2core-a-ge-wan63.inet.ntl.com [213.106.237 .41] 5 9 ms 9 ms 9 ms lee-bb-a-so-130-0.inet.ntl.com [62.253.187.89] 6 9 ms 12 ms 9 ms lee-bb-b-ae0-0.inet.ntl.com [62.253.187.186] 7 13 ms 15 ms 14 ms man-bb-a-so-700-0.inet.ntl.com [62.253.185.193] 8 203 ms 206 ms 228 ms man-bb-b-ae0-0.inet.ntl.com [62.253.187.178] 9 213 ms 212 ms 232 ms win-bb-a-so-300-0.inet.ntl.com [62.253.185.138] 10 21 ms 208 ms 20 ms win-bb-b-ae0-0.inet.ntl.com [213.105.172.162] 11 24 ms 22 ms 20 ms pop-bb-a-so-010-0.inet.ntl.com [62.253.185.201] 12 23 ms 24 ms 25 ms pop-bb-b-ge-000-0.inet.ntl.com [213.105.174.230] 13 22 ms 25 ms 43 ms tele-ic-2-so-700-0.inet.ntl.com [62.253.184.6] 14 22 ms 22 ms 22 ms 212.250.14.42 15 22 ms 22 ms 22 ms ge-0-2-0.lon1-9.nildram.net [62.72.141.38] 16 23 ms 22 ms 27 ms jolt-gw.nildram.net [195.149.20.214] 17 22 ms 22 ms 22 ms secure.jolt.co.uk [82.133.85.65] Trace complete. Could I be getting more lag than usual because of the hops at 8,9 and 10? It sucks for gaming because my pings have increased which is why I changed over to ntl because I heard the pings there were awesome. |
Re: Pings increase?
Dunno who told you that NTL had better pings than other providers. It may well depend on the area you are living in, ammount of traffic, number of people hammering the bandwidth etc.

Re: Pings increase?
The latency to Jolt is stable but a little bit high. Not entirely sure what's going on there. Perhaps it's having to take a longer route than normal due a link failure or something, see if it gets resolved.
As Paul said a lot depends on where you are, if you use Bulldog or another LLU operator pings will be similar to cable, only the BT based DSL tends to ping a little higher. My own LLU connection pings pretty well. Pinging www.bbc.net.uk [212.58.224.116] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 212.58.224.116: bytes=32 time=7ms TTL=247 Reply from 212.58.224.116: bytes=32 time=7ms TTL=247 Reply from 212.58.224.116: bytes=32 time=7ms TTL=247 Reply from 212.58.224.116: bytes=32 time=7ms TTL=247 Ping statistics for 212.58.224.116: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 7ms, Maximum = 7ms, Average = 7ms |
Re: Pings increase?
It was something that was happening last night, many of the core routers on the last hops across the ntl network last night just pinged ~200 constantly, manchester, redbus, a level 3 router and everything after them was a mess.
If I was to guess, maybe part of the core was being worked on, shut down and people were routed over somewhere else; somebody else with me on a server lagged all of a sudden with me at the same time, from an area that is nowhere near me. For instance now - Tracing route to www.jolt.co.uk [82.133.85.65] over a maximum of 30 hops: 1 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms 192.168.1.1 2 9 ms 8 ms 7 ms 10.249.148.1 3 11 ms 11 ms 9 ms nott-t2cam1-a-v129.inet.ntl.com [80.4.47.165] 4 22 ms 13 ms 11 ms nott-t2core-a-ge-wan72.inet.ntl.com [80.1.79.61] 5 17 ms 13 ms 13 ms lee-bb-a-so-200-0.inet.ntl.com [62.253.188.33] 6 19 ms 18 ms 19 ms pop-bb-b-so-100-0.inet.ntl.com [62.253.185.238] 7 23 ms 21 ms 20 ms tele-ic-2-so-700-0.inet.ntl.com [62.253.184.6] 8 18 ms 17 ms 19 ms 212.250.14.42 9 19 ms 19 ms 17 ms ge-0-2-0.lon1-9.nildram.net [62.72.141.38] 10 18 ms 20 ms 18 ms jolt-gw.nildram.net [195.149.20.214] 11 19 ms 18 ms 19 ms secure.jolt.co.uk [82.133.85.65] Trace complete. |
Re: Pings increase?
I had the same problem lastnight with a 200 ping while online gaming. I normally have around a 20 ping and am on the 10mb I think there was just a problem lastnight like jtwn said.

Re: Pings increase?
hi all
I play css and tactical ops etc and my ping as also gone up from around 15-20 to 40-50 (i'm on 10 meg) i disconnected, did 5 trace routes and got results of around +1000 on some hops it then went back to normal which is why i took no action but now pings are back to a steady 40-50. And no it's not spyware yadda yadda i don't do pr0n or owt like that jus wanna frag :sniper: If this is caused by file sharers NTL should cut their speed to around 1kb/s up and down and if those people complain NTL should point out that they are breaking the law. |
Re: Pings increase?
bringerofnoise you say they should cut file sharers speeds and tell them there breaking the law. Thats not true file sharing is not against the law but sharing copyright material is. lots of people use certain file sharing programs fully legally and dont take copyrighted files/media. They could be using it for sending information back and forth between work etc etc. . .
