Plug and Socket networking
 

Hello

Has anyone any experience of using plug and socket networking with an ntl cable modem.

I read somewhere that a company called Devolo make the equipment but I am not sure if it can be used with an ntl 100 silver cable modem box.

Any information would be much appreciated.

I'm not sure if I remember correctly, but I think zinglebarb has experience of this kind of kit.

When I looked into it I thought the units were quite expensive, but it seemed a viable alternative to a wireless setup.

In its simplest configuration it would work to 'relay' a signal from a pc, say upstairs, to a cable modem downstairs, via the house mains, with no problem.

I'm not sure about how fast it is, though???

My bro has this and uses it to network between the Cable Modem and his Router, I think the kit he has runs at 11MBit Half Duplex, so plenty fast enough for 4meg, but probably wouldnt make 10.

Thank you both, I am looking at networking the desktop pc to a laptop in order that the internet can be accessed in another room.

newer home plugs transmit at 85 meg and the network is very easy to install and set up you are better with a router but you can share Host to client :) Cheap wireless router and cardbus or usb adapter would work out cheaper

I love homeplug!!!!

Wireless is cheaper but, unlike death and nurses, it's not guaranteed!!!
I've lost count of the number of folks that I've helped setup their wireless networks, configure this, do that, pray, fiddle with ssid, encryption, wep or wpa, passphrases. passwords, move adaptor 6 inches, people walk across the signal....

Homeplug on the other hand, plug one adaptor into your router via ethernet, plug that adaptor into the mains socket. Get another adaptor, plug into mains socket wherever in the house (end of extension at bottom of garden...) again connect to pc/laptop/xbox/ps2/fridge/whatever via ethernet, job done!!!!!!!!!!

No setup, no configuration - yes you can encrypt it using supplied software but it doesn't leak past the meter so why bother?!

The only sticky point is in flats for instance - depending on the age of the wiring you MAY bleed into someone else's property, but highly unlikely.

Realistic speeds are more than acceptable in comparison to wireless, the only downside is you are attached by a cable, but 9/10 people are anyway. That's a trick that's missing at the moment, built in homeplug to run through the psu.
You'll see around 5-7Mbps on the 14Mbps adaptors, 18-28 with 85Mbps and the new AV standard should deliver approx. 100Mbps, so ethernet speeds.

The kit is expensive though, a year ago it was cheaper than now but with the new homeplug AV standard coming this summer, this will hopefully bring prices down.

To answer the OP, do a search for homeplug - choice is limited at the moment (Acer did some really good units a while ago but appear to have stopped) and devolo are the premium brand, but if you look for UK plugs and they're homeplug 1.0 compliant, then go for it.
