Hi - :welcome: to CF

I'm assuming the refernce to phone lines means you are using ADSL (rather than NTL/Telewest cable broadband).

With ADSL, the modem is typically built-in to the router. An example from the Linksys range is here.

yep you asume correct, what i want to do is for a friend, he wants to get connected to the internet , but does not want leads running all over the place, he only has 1 phone socket downstairs and his pc is upstairs, so i wondered if it was possible to connect the router downstairs and use either a pci wireless or usb type connecter on his dektop to link them

That's what wireless was designed for ;)
Well maybe :D

Personally I would recommend using Linksys devices (slightly more expensive but generally better) and same manufacturer router and adapters. If you or he are happy installing PCI cards, that would probably be better than USB.

Re: wireless help

D-link are also suppliers of fine equipment as well as linksys.

Just make sure what you but is a adsl router not a cable router.
