Network Problem

I would be grateful for some help.
I have 2 win2k pro pcs conected via a wired router. PC1 can see and connect to PC2 but PC2 cannot see PC1. PC2 can ping PC1 by ip address but not by name, no firewalls are running. Bothe PCs can access the net. I have tried everything that I can find on the net with no success.

Any help would be appreciated.

You say no firewalls are running, do you have one installed? Is it Zone Alarm by any chance?

If it's ZA then I'm guessing not turned off correctly

My thoughts exactly, Same thing happened to me a while back, computer was reachable by IP but not by name as ZA was blocking the windows file sharing.

You can ping by name even if they're not usually

Thanks guys.

Yes they are both in the same workgroup and I do have ZA. How should I stop it?

Re: Network Problem

Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs->ZoneAlarm->Uninstall

Should do the trick :)

But you can get it....

Just FYI, I have used this without problem, however, use it at your own risk.

Or just open ZA, look in the options and un-tick run at windows start up and then reboot. Just closing it after Windows starts will lead to problems as it can leave processes running or can physically lock your connection down in strange ways.

Yup, though I have heard this doesnt always solve the problem either. The best way I know of is to leave ZA running with just the security disabled (set to low or off).

I stoped ZA from running at startup and can now ping PC1 from PC2, but I still cannot get PC2 to see PC1 It timesout wth this message:-

workgroup is not accessable
the semaphore timeout period has expired

Have checked workgroup names and they are the same on both pcs

Try uninstalling ZA just to check if that is the problem... ;)
