PowerDvd 7

just to say that when I 'upgraded' my version 6 PowerDvd to version 7, I found I could no longer play previously saved xvid files, luckily it only cost thirteen quid to find that out, but I thought I would share ;)

- going back to V6 gets it working, again (correct codec loaded, of course) :)

mine is the 'deluxe' version, I have a fully 'paid for' version 6, it plays xvid files, no problem, with the XviD-1.1.0-30122005 codec, my 'paid for' version 7, doesn't :D

Help! Don't know the correct terminology, but my 'internal DVD rom' has stopped working, when I insert a disc in the drive it doesn't seem to get started and makes strange burring noises, there is Power DVD installed on my computer. windows XP. Can anyone please explain (in layman's terms please) if there is a way to test it? Also if it turns out it is completely broken, is it difficult to install a new one, ie without an engineer?

hi

If it was ok, previously, and now doesn't work, it does sound a bit poorly. Sometimes using a cleaning disk can revive a failing drive, if it is a dirty laser lens causing the problem, but as new drives are so cheap, it may be worth just getting a new one.

Installing a new dvd drive is actually quite easy, provided the case isn't too fiddly. The drive has a data cable, power cable & sound cable & is secured by 4 screws. Basically you remove the old one, noting which way the cables connect, then, when inserting the new one, it is literally the reverse of removal, the cables connect in exactly the same way, tighten the screws & it is done. As I say, the worst bit can be that the case is cramped, making things fiddly to get to.

Let us know how you get on :)

I wouldn't have minded, if it had worked as well as the previous version, but I have downloaded quite a few TV programmes & they are all Xvid encoded....

Hopefully they will issue a patch

What does Device Manager say about the drive? Is it in My Computer?
