Aol/ntl connection problem. Please Help its driving me mad
 

Hello to everyone.
I wonder if any of you good folk could help me fix what is probably i simple problem. I have a Netgear WGT624 v3 router connected to my cable modem supplied by aol through my NTL cable. I have it connected to the modem with a cat 5 network cable which in turn is plugged in to my routers internet slot.

The router comunicates with my p.c via a netgear WG111 wireless adapter plugged into my computers usb slot. The comunication between the p.c and router is fine reporting a strong signal being recieved.

The problem is i have no internet connection!!!:dunce:
I have tried a friends linksys router which again was able to communicate between itself and the p.c but also reported no internet connection availiable.

Im sure i have everythings connected up correctly. Im not so sure that i am using the correct network cable to connect the router to the modem. It is a stardard cat5 network cable with the rj45 plugs.

Do i need to use a crossover cable? Ive tried the recommended boot up sequence for the equipment.

Please if anyone has any ideas i would be eternaly gratefull.

Is it just NTL that your having problems with? Its just that i noticed the thread title said AOL as well, so im confused.

my isp is aol. The modem was fitted by an ntl engineer.

You won't need a crossover cable - a standard Cat5 cable is what you need.

Just out of interest, what IP address (if any) does the PC get when the router is hooked-up?

Does the PC get a connection OK if it's connected directly to the modem, ie without having the wireless router included in the equation?

Also, you say that you've checked the boot-up sequence... I presume that you've rebooted the cable modem since you added the router, as otherwise the cable modem won't recongise the change of MAC address from the PC to the router.

Was the router supplied by AOL?
Officially, AOL don't support 'home networking' over Cable Broadband.
From this page it looks like you have to configure the router to logon to the AOL network with your AOL screen name. If the router doesn't allow network login it won't work!

Yes the computer connects to the internet fine when its hard wired to the p.c. The modem was supplied by aol and fitted by an ntl engineer. The communication between the pc and the router works fine and you are able to go into the routers set up screen by typing in the routers ip and entering the password etc. In the routers setup/internet section it reads no internet availiable.

I would suggest as Aragon has in the post above, AOL needs a screenname etc to log onto their network so you need to put that into the router settings

When i worked in ntl there it wasn't possible to use a home network on an AOL over cable connection (unless you setup your own proxy server but then things get kinda complicated).

I don't know if it is possible now, but AOL uses PPPoE connections, so you'll need to configure the router with those details first, but somehow i don't think it'll be that simple...
