NTL connection problem - ping spikes
Hi guys,
I've had NTL cable installed over a year now and have had few problems except the current issues that I am having and this is something that I have only noticed for the last couple of weeks or so. The problem is that it's cutting out every so often. I have tried rebooting my wireless router and set-top box, but neither of these has had any discernable effect. My TV reception has no problems. I do a "ping www.google.co.uk -t" in the command prompt to see what's going on, and for between 5-10 bounces pings at between 30-50ms, but then either doesn't respond or jumps to about 1500ms for a couple of pings. It somestimes drops the connecting and doesn't respond to the pings for perhaps another 10. I have disabled all MAC addresses except my own, so I'm definitely the only one making a connection through my wi-fi router. Any ideas on what the problem could be would be greatly appreciated, I would rather not go straight to NTL telephone support as haven't had the best experiences with them, so if anyone has any suggestions before I resort to them it'd be greatly appreciated, Thanks! Edit: Oh yes! And I'm based in Manchester and when the connection is working, it tends not to be going at it's full potential (1 meg), more half that. Cheers again. |
Re: NTL connection problem - ping spikes
Does the problem still occur without the router being connected?
:welcome: to the site too. :) |

But yeah, the problem still occurs once the router is taken out of the equation :( |
Re: NTL connection problem - ping spikes
This is exactly the same problem that I, and it seems, many other people seem to be having..

Re: NTL connection problem - ping spikes
yep, same here .. they recently did a reseg of the UBR after about a year... and it fixed the prob .. for about 5 days! now pings seem to be better, but browsing is poor.
Yahoo.co.uk has failed to load for me most nights, including tonight, it just hangs loading.... proxies are crap. |
Re: NTL connection problem - ping spikes
Yes I keep having this problem makes playing CS im possible. Sadly it is contention as by day its fine its peak times the pings go through the roof.
Mind there is some nights its fine the ones those maxing the connections are out. Also Manchester. |
Re: NTL connection problem - ping spikes
Tonights wonderful connection I pay for 2mb and recieve 516k in hte evening.
Ping statistics for 212.58.227.71: Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 95, Lost = 5 (5% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 16ms, Maximum = 498ms, Average = 154ms That was to bbc.co.uk ---------- Post added at 00:50 ---------- Previous post was yesterday at 23:33 ---------- same connection with nothing changed after midnight. Ping statistics for 212.58.227.71: Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 100, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 15ms, Maximum = 43ms, Average = 18ms which proves the slow speed and high pings are to much trafic on the network and I doubt NTL can manage to upgrade all to 4mb and give a decent service. |

It's really annoying me, I only bought Battlefield 2 the other day and am only experiencing its brilliance in short stops and starts. There's nothing worse than flying a helicopter with a team in it, being disconnected for a few seconds and then waking up to have just flown into the side of a mountain! Plllleeaassee NTL sort it out! edit: Also from what I can tell, I seem to be losing the packets at Baguley in South Manc. |

You can berate people who want discounts all you want but you're not doing yourself any favours sticking with a company supplying an unsatisfactory service when there are so many other options out there. Very few companies have any loyalty to their customers and ntl even less than most, no point in having loyalty back really. |
