What Wireless Router are you using and would you recommend it?

Hi all! New member here :)

Just wanted to know what wireless router everyone's using and if they would recommend it? And whether it was easy to set up.

Because I'm on the look out for one and it will be the first Wireless LAN I'm gonna be setting up at home. Going to be connecting 2 PC's and a Laptop.

I'm on NTL 2Mb at present, hoping to switch to 10Mb soon.

i use a wired router more stable easy to set up. and if you are only on 2mb and get a wireless router it is likely to be slow

Will it be slow on a 10Mb line then? Cos I've read on here that NTL don't seem to be able to meet most people's expectations of at least 8Mb or more.

I have just bought a Linksys to replace my dead Belkin. The improvement in wireless range was immediate and quite breathtaking. The user set-up options on the Linksys are a lot clearer and more functional as well.

I purchased a Belkin last year to replace a dead Linksys - in fact the Linksys was the 2nd replacement after both of the previous passed away ! The Belkin was easy to setup and has run trouble-free ever since.

I think the best router is the one you can set up and then forget about.

Cheers,

Linksys WRK54G - Wouldn't recommend it, the range is terrible not even reaching 20metres indoors at times and it keep dropping the wireless signal, which requires a reboot of the router for it to work again.

Note the model, it is NOT the same as a WRT54G (which by all accounts are excellent)

I've used a Belkin Pre-N router for approximately 12 months - easy to set up and the only problem I've had with my wireless network since then turned out to be nothing to do with the router.

Airport Extreme :)

Good range, setup was a breeze, range is good, and it looks nice in my room. Plus Airtunes is a nice bonus!

Only drawback is that it doens't have any ethernet ports for wired lan connections.

Linksys WRT54G ALL the way.

I have two of these beasties, both with third party firmware installed (to give many more features). Buy them new for £55+ or get them cheap on eBay or through Amazon (Used and New) - I got my second for £32 NEW!

I use one as a gateway and one as a range extender/AP - the firmware allows use of WDS meaning the routers are connected to each other wirelessly, not cabled as a normal repeater/AP needs. The ranges are excellent.

Hello

I have been using a Belkin 125 High Speed Wireless router for last year or so. Did not have too much trouble stting it up however since I have upgraded to 10 Mbps, it has been freezing up now and then, which needs a soft reset to get going again. Wireless range is ok for my house but I don't have experience of any other router as it is my first one. If it packs up for good, I will not be going for another Belkin for sure. Linksys looks promising with all the customisations available for it. Other things i would probably look for in a router is a button to turn on and off the wireless mode (just for the sake of added security) and a reset button.:)

Hi All,
I have the Linksys WRT54GS. The S just means speed booster. It works to speed up the wireless side.I'd never had a router before and I found it easy to set up.Once you have loaded in the CD you can just press the button on the front to get the wireless signal going.Just remember to go into the program to set your security up properly.

I forgot to mention - check what version of the router you're getting (see http://www.wrt54g.net/pages.php?p=guide_version).

Version 4s pose a small difficulty when upgrading the firmware, while version 5s cannot be modified; v5 is the latest. You'll see people asking the version question on eBay when buying a WRT54G, as most people who want these excellent WiFI routers want to modify the firmware to improve the functionality of the units.
