File sharing XP & Win98se
Sorry if this has been asked before. I have an XP home box hardwired to a wireless router and a win98se box talking via a wireless USB device. I want to set up file and printer sharing so that I can share the xp box's printer and put files from either machine into the shared folder on the xp box. The interweb has left me totally confuesd as to how to do this.
Is anyone kind enough to guid a thicky through this step by step? Cheers:Yikes: |
Re: File sharing XP & Win98se
Firstly, if you are using any firewall such as Zonealarm you will have to add the other computers IP address to the allowed adapters in the firewall's trusted zone.
Now go to Start, Settings, Control panel on the Windows 98 machine and open up "Network" icon. It will open up and you should see a button saying "Print and file sharing". Click it and tick the two boxes to allow file sharing and printer sharing. Now you need to set up sharing of files: Find the folder on your Windows XP machine you want to share and right click it. It should give you option for sharing, you may have to click properties and its off one of the tabs. To set up the printer: On the Windows 98 system, point to Start, settings, and select Printers. Click on "Add printer" and follow the prompts on screen. Then select "Network Printer" and then either type the name the printer is registered as or click browse to browse the netwrok. You will probably need the printer drivers CD at this point. Can't remember much else as I did this ages ago but that's roughly what I had to do. You may need to give your PC and network a name too. You can access the shared resources by going into Network Neighbourhood. I'm sure someone else will be along shortly if I'm missing a few things. |

Halcyon - many thanks. The nitterner seemed to be telling me to do things with username & password - have the same on both machines? Do you know if that's the case? Do I have to "declare" which files/folders are shareable?

Re: File sharing XP & Win98se
Yeah you have to say which files or folders you want to share, or you can share the whole drive.... but remember if you share a whole drive you will be sharing the whole PC's contents in that case.
PS: I forgot to add that you will have to set up the same workgroup on both machines using the same workgroup name. You will probably see that you have to give an ID to identify each computer on the network too.
