How do i swap from ethernet to USB

Hi all,
First post so i hope someone will help me out, i have always ran my ntl broadband connection using an ethernet cable but i recently bought a laptop and as i dont have a router was wondering if i could connect from my modem to computer using the usb connection and then create a network between the two computers using LAN cards. I've heard that this will allow internet connection on the second computer using 'Internet connection sharing'. If I can do this then the thing i really want to know is how do i swap from ethernet to USB? Ive tried just changing the cables and re-starting xp but that didnt work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Doug

Well thats what i intend to do but in the meantime i would like to know how to do it the other way. I know it can be done i'm just not sure how to switch my modem to pc connection from ethernet to USB. As there are only 2 ways of connecting the modem to the PC then this should be simple, i would have thought.
Cheers

I dont know how to do it with USB, but I did use ICS once when I was starting out. I had 2 nic cards in one comp and 1 nic in the other.

cable modem to one comp > then rj45 from that comp to the other. Just make sure ICS is enable on the main comp with 2 nics on. :)

That does not answer my post at all. Nor does telling me to go and buy a piece of hardware at 7 o clock at night. ALL I WANT TO KNOW is how do i swap my internet connection from ethernet to USB. I appreciate people think theyre helping but i just want this simple piece of information.
Thankyou
Doug

Guys, if I might make a little observation ... I think sometimes in our scramble to help out on here we are a little keen to offer too much information ... all perfectly well intended I know, but if someone asks 'how do I do x?', IMO the first part of your reply should be 'you do x like this...' and then, if you feel like carrying on talking, offer additional comments about buying equipment or trying other stuff. ;)
