Why are they even regioned in the first place? It's obvious that anyone who has a little knowledge can just burn a copy of a different region re-regioned on a PC and p[lay it like that... Is it just a way of trying to make us pay more for DVDs ?

No, it's so the movie companies can release films in different parts of the world at different times.

Although it's very easy to do, you'd be surprised at the number of people that have heard it's possible but don't know how to do it. Admittedly, people that are hooked up to the net tend to Google it, and provided they can filter out the junk spam sites, they'll eventually stumble on the info, but if you don't have access to the net then you're kinda stumped and end up paying over the odds for a DVD for your particular region.

In this case, the final score is definitely Hardware companies (and consumers) 1 - Movie companies 0... but I bet it's not gonna be this easy when we all upgrade to Blu-Ray players.
