USB to ETHERNET HELP

Hi, right basically on HD1 i am connected to the internet via USB. i want to change to ETHERNET [not installed at the moment incase it messes up]
so i got HD2 (3gig) lol and installed the ethernet card and drivers (called realtek) and also ntl broadband software. the ENET light does not light up unless i 'yank' it in. actually force it...(is this normal? )
right, i installed ntl broadband software and still nothing comes up, the enet stays solid (from time to time) and still nothing. I phoned ntl technitions and yes they were pretty useless, i phoned today to book an engineer (becauseon friday when i rang them, the guy i spoke to said i need to book an engineer which cant be done today ) today, they told me to call back tomorrow after 30 mins speaking to them :Yikes:

im running win98se.

when i click start>run>winipcfg- it brings it up and says PPP (on HD2)
if you need more info, i will switch the HD to get more info if required.
When the technition was instructing me on the phone, he told me to scroll down to 'realtek' and clicked 'release all' and ok. Still nothing.
Could it be a fault in modem, or could it be after 2 yrs of using only usb, the ethnernet connection rusted up :D

Re: USB to ETHERNET HELP

Did you make sure you power down everything before switching cables.
They should just click in to place when you connect them.

If there is communication between the network card and modem the Ethernet Enet light should be visible and flash when pages load.

Also try removing the USB drivers.

Re: USB to ETHERNET HELP

try unplugging the power to the modem for about 30 secs then powering back up with the ethernet cable plugged in
this should give your ethernet adapter on your machine an ip address

Try fitting and removing the network card a few times to make sure that it clears any crap off the contacts, failing that either the card or the cable is faulty.
Normally you would just fit the card, install the drivers, connect the cable, unplug the power to the modem for 30 seconds, plug the modem power cable in again and you should be all systems go.
Lose the ntl CD, you don't need it for Ethernet connection.

Re: USB to ETHERNET HELP

Its been a long time since I had anything to do with W98 but I recall when I installed an ethernet card, and it was a Realtek, I had a problem installing the driver. IIRC W98 already comes with a Realtek driver but, in my case anyway, it was the wrong driver. For some reason the Realtek CD will not install it's driver when it finds W98's resident driver. You have to delete it or at least rename it.
Maybe you should check this out or at least ensure ( from Device Manager) that the card and driver is correctly installed and recognised by Windows.

Good luck with it.
