'packet' errors etc
Hi
Since the last few weeks I have being getting problems with my internet connection. 1) pages not displaying properly in i.e pics not displaying properly or garbled text 2)zipped files being corrupt when i d/l them and try and unzip even though i know they are 100% good 3)getting various 'packet' errors on a online game i play which worked fine before any ideas on what is causing this or how i can test for errors? I am on the blueyonder 2mb service (inc free speed upgrade) in Birmingham. I have a black surfboard 5100. I have ruled out my wireless connection by connecting the pc directly to the modem and have out of desperation reinsatlled winxp sp2 but am still having the same problems:( |

:welcome: to CableForum.
First, I would recommend you make sure your Antivirus and Firewall software are up to date. Then, run a full scan of your computer. Now, make sure that you have some good anti-spyware software. I personally use AdAware, Spybot, Spyware Blaster and Windows Defender to defend my system. Run a full scan with you Antispyware software. Now, I am not saying it is spyware, or a virus (I don't personally know of spyware or a virus that would do this), but it is something that it worth eliminating. It actually sounds like you have a dodgy modem or dodgy connection. If this is the case, you will need to call faults to correct the problem. |
Re: 'packet' errors etc
firewall/anti virus etc are all up to date so i think it's going to have to be a call to CS!!
---------- Post added at 20:14 ---------- Previous post was at 19:35 ---------- well my first sample of CS! first person had no idea and disconnected me and second person said ring up back when you are having packet loss even though i explained it heppened randomly |
Re: 'packet' errors etc
Same here, seriously, as detailed in this thread - http://cableforum.co.uk/board/showthread.php?t=45349
30% Packet Loss, 64BYTES (yes, BYTES) a second from the Telewest gamefile server at times, Peaked at about 20kbps, shocking. Oh, and corruption. I have rung Customer Support, i have an engineer out thursday to see what the problem could be, CS fobbed me off with a load of crap "Signal to noise ratio is too high" and i doubt they even know what the problem is. |
Re: 'packet' errors etc
let me know how your engineer visit goes because CS are telling me that the problem will sort itself out soon and there is nothing they can do as there are no known 'tickets' open for my area!
cheers |
Re: 'packet' errors etc
Tonight the problem seems almost non-existant, but occasionally it kicks in really badly.
The max throughput i've had on my line tonight is 2.8mbps. But i'm averaging around 1.2mbps. Which i hate as pay for 4mbps. I'll let you know how the engineers visit goes. And meanwhile keep checking for reported faults. Also, where are you based? |
Re: 'packet' errors etc
I'm in birmingham.
i just tried pinging bbc.co.uk for 30 mins and had the following results which don't look anywhere near as bad as yours but I know i definatley have a problem somewhere :( Ping statistics for 212.58.224.82: Packets: Sent = 1639, Received = 1620, Lost = 19 (1% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 17ms, Maximum = 487ms, Average = 20ms I have a screenshot what pages can look like when they don't display properly which i'll post up soon ---------- Post added at 23:09 ---------- Previous post was at 23:05 ---------- this is what a web page can look like for me at it's worst. if i refresh it will come up ok! this was tomtom.com http://www.ish.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/web.doc ---------- Post added at 23:12 ---------- Previous post was at 23:09 ---------- and downloading that .doc back from my webspace it looks like this for me now http://www.ish.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/web2.jpg (THE ABOVE 2 PICS SHOULD BE DIFFERENT?) ---------- Post added at 23:25 ---------- Previous post was at 23:12 ---------- here is a tracert to blueyonder.co.uk Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. Re: 'packet' errors etc
Something tells me you can't traceroute blueyonder.co.uk, you're not allowed to, whenever i trace it, it never works either.
I've just run an 8hour ping to bbc.co.uk, and the issue seems to have sorted itself out, only 6% packet loss over 8hours, and everything now seems to be responding, not sure how, or why, but it is. I may even canel my engineer for tomorrow. |
Re: 'packet' errors etc
Ish, I think you will need an engineer to look at your connection.

Re: 'packet' errors etc
After speaking to CS numerous times over the last few days and they have said they will not send a tech out unless the lights on the modem are showing a fault.
I spent 45 mins on the phone today with the tech support guy explaining everything and what I had checked hardware/software wise etc. Even he agreed that the fault was not on my side but because at the time of his tests there was no packet loss showing he would not send a tech out unless i agreed to pay a charge if the fault did not happed while the tech was there. so after 10 years of being a telewest/blueyonder customer I cancelled my services with them today and will be moving over to http://www.bulldogbroadband.com/ |
