Upgrading to 10mb

Hi,
Could someone please help me with some info...
I currently have broadband with NTL through a Samsung STB. We are paying for 10mb but it is only giving us 5mb. After speaking with NTL they say for £50 they will install a free modem which will give us 10mb.

Can someone please tell me....

1) Why should I pay £50 for something they are already taking our money for
2) Could I buy a modem and do they work myself...if so what do I need and how do I do it ?

Thanks

Thanks for the quick response Zeph
D'oh :(
Does the modem connect to the STB or do they feed a new RF cable direct to the modem ?

You could be assertive and tell them you want a modem fitted for free, as you are paying for a 10Mb connection, of which they havn't given you correct hardware to use.
Obviously, they can just laugh at you ;)

The RF feed is split from your current services (if any) But thats not the end of the technical details.

Samsung can have the 10 meg service but will NOT provide 10 meg. Best you can get is between 5 and 6 meg.

The 5Mb limit on the Samsung boxes was discussed at great length when the 10Mb service was introduced.

As you work for ntl, I'm suprised you don't know this.

It's on ntl's website:-

My mistake, I thought that this issue had been resolved, I'm new to these forums and was only trying to help. There are known issues with the HFC which I have access to and am able to get these resolved which is why I asked for the post code. Is this wrong? Should I not offer my help?

Wowzers....
This forum sure do move fast, turn your back for two mins and there's loads of posts ;)
Well it looks like I just pay the money and get ntl to sort it.

A big thanks to all who have been involved in helping :tu:
