Modem seems to have died

Hi. I've been with NTL for 6 years, now on the 2MB connection. I have one of those old 3COM CMX Cable Modems that looks like a big white flat slab of something, which I bought when I had NTL installed. The CM seems to have finally died on me. It suddenly cut out yesterday lunchtime, came alive for an hour or two again, and hasn't worked since. I know it isn't the connection or the computer, because I've borrowed my sisters CM, and everything works fine with it.

So, my questions are, have NTL changed something that would cause my old Modem to be unusable? I notice they did maintenance in my area of the last couple of days before it stopped working. If not, and the modem has simply given up the ghost, will NTL replace it with a new, modern snazzy looking one? Or will I have to buy a new one myself, as I did when I first had NTL installed?

Thanks in advance.

You should now be paying for the modem in your monthly costs so ring them up and tell them your modem is dead and needs replacement. Probably died of old age rather than something NTL did :)

I had a terrayon surfboard (though it did not much resemble a surfboard I often noted) and that died (wiped out ;)) - a bloke came round and replaced it with a trendy little blue new one with flashing lights on the front that's not that much larger than a floppy disk and does not get knocked over all the time like the 'surfboard' :dozey:

contact ntl and they'll send an engineer who'll install an ntl:250 :)

(the little blue modem referred to above)

Thanks for all your replies - much appreciated. I'll give NTL a call on Monday and get me a new flashy modem.

Good luck, my modem died yesterday. Spent a combined total of 2 hours trying to explain that the ethernet plug was broken and my computer was setup fine. Yet technical support still insisted on running a bunch of dos commands.

Technical support was crap, but the technician who came round was brand new and really helpfull. New Modem looks nice too

Hmmm, the strangest thing. I took out my sisters modem, tried my own one again, and it now appears to be working fine. Perhaps it just has a loose connection somewhere?

Well it could be intermittent, because youre paying for it, youre owed a new Modem anyway so you might as well have it :)

The strangeness continues. The modem worked from about 10pm last night until I turned in for the night. This morning and all day today, nothing again. Now all of a sudden it's working again. Definite phone call tomorrow.

Its probably an internal component on its way out. As it heats up it stops working. As it cools down it starts again. The same happened with my portable 12" tele. Usually a quick thump on the top cures my tele (this was a dry joint but same effect with heat, contracting and expanding) but I doubt it would do much good to a modem!
