1080 problem

When I set HDMI to 1080 rather than 720, things like the TeleWest menu look terrible - blurred etc. The HD programmes themselves dont look much different so Im assuming they are broadcast at 720? Is anyone else getting this problem? Any suggestions as to how I might get round this?

Re: 1080 problem

1) How is it connected?

2) To what TV is it connected?

3) :welcome: to the site. :)

Re: 1080 problem

telewest are only going to broadcast in 720p and 1080i on hi res. so by choosing 1080 your choosing the poorer signal,, your best going with 720 which is in progresive scan.

Re: 1080 problem

Please forgive an old audio hack for asking a basic question.

I thought in the bright shiny new digital world, that in the numbers game bigger is better.

I understand the difference between interlaced and progressive (though not sure why one should be better than the other)

But shouldn't 1080 be better than 720?

See, told you it was basic. Not doubting anyones word, but would like to understand.

Anyone willing to educate me, please?

Thanks

Dan

This was mentioned to me last night to and i had trouble believing it. I have my Xbox hooked upto my telly in 1080i but people tell me that 720p is better, i cant tell either way but which is supposed to be better?

Re: 1080 problem

If the broadcast is in 720 and 1080 is selected, then the picture has to be upscaled to the higher resolution. That kind of processing will always result in an inferior picture.

Re: 1080 problem

In other words, 1080 will only be superior with a broadcast at that resolution

Re: 1080 problem

So with regard to an Xbox 360 where you select 720p or 1080i as the output then 1080i is the better option then?

Re: 1080 problem

It depends on what resolution the game is at BlueRaja? I've not used a 360 myself so don't know what it looks like on a HD set, could it hurt to try?

I have done and i cant tell the difference to be honest. You specify in the console setup - not the game - what format you play in and i have tried both 720p and 1080i, both of which look great - but - like i say - hard to differentiate!

If 1080 doesnt cause any problems, leave it on that then? As long as the TV can support it then you should be ok

In all honesty though - that wasnt really my question but thanks for helping, what i wanted to know is which one is supposed to be the better format 720p or 1080i.

Re: 1080 problem

Right

720p uses Progressive Scanning, hence the "p" and therefor SHOULD be (but maybe not noticably) better than 1080i which uses old style Interlace Scanning. I get the feeling though that 1080 should be a higher resolution but maybe not as good quality for the Conneseuirs?

Thanks for trying mate, but here is a more techy answer i got elsewhere which seems to suggest as you say 1080i is not quite as good depending on the circumstances.

As with most things, it depends.

Quote:

1080i has a resolution of 1920x1080, while 720p is 1280x720. But 720p has double the frame-rate.

If we assume that you have a screen capable of displaying 1920x1080 without downscaling, 1080i will be vastly superior for a cinema movie (which was shot at only 24fps, and thus gains nothing from the added frame rate anyway). For something fast-moving, like a live sports broadcast, the extra frame-rate of 720p may be better because it makes for smoother motion.

Of course, if your display is only capable of 1280x720 (or 1366x768 or, worse still, 1024x768) the extra resolution you get from 1080i will be wasted, but the extra frame rate of 720p isn't, so 720p will be better.

It also depends how good your deinterlacing circuitry is. If it doesn't support film-mode detection (or the source isn't actually shot on film anyway) then 1080i will be downscaled to 1920x512 progressive, which is much less impressive than 1920x1080.
