10mb £35 v 4mb £25 (newsgroups??)
 

Finally i've been updgraded from my old 2mb link to the wonderful 10mb speed (although i've only maxed it out at 6.7mb so far!)

Anyway, i was quite happy with 2mb, so i think i might save myself a tenner a month by "downgrading" to the 4mb service.

I was already to do this until I saw on the comparison page on the telewest site that it says under the 10mb elite service "Free access to blueyonder newsgroups", yet not for the cheaper packages!

Well seeing as newsgroups is one of my main uses i dont want to risk dropping down to the £25 and not getting access to news.blueyonder.co.uk

I'm certain in my own mind that the lower packages can access the newsgroups, but i wouldn't mind some confirmation from a few of you guys.

Im on the 1Mb at the moment,still waiting to be upgraded when and if they see fit, mine costs £25 per month and I do get access to the news groups,always have had for the last 5 years,I use them every day ....

Depends what you use newsgroups for. If it's binaries you're after then Blueyonder isn't the best place anyway - most ISPs don't have a particularly great retention time. You'd be better off directing a portion of that £10 at a news provider.

I'm very happy with news.blueyonder.co.uk's two day or so retention on the major binary newsgroups and i use a premium server (astraweb) as a fills only server where required.

(i've just gotta keep an eye on newsbin everyday to see if theres owt i want and get in there quick!) ;)


Cheers telecom, i think i'll get on the blower and downgrade to 4mb. I was happy with 5 hours for 5gb on the 2mb link, so half that time will be even better and save a tenner a month.....

Not really worth having the 10mb link just yet until you get into HD stuff or are a compulsive downloader!! :Yikes:

Had upgrade to 10mb as well 6.7mb is best ive had using the router, take the router out of the equation and had full 1280kb/s.

Apparently a lot of the routers for home use cant cope with the 10mb connection speed(i use a linksys befsr41 v2),

if you wanna kepp the connection speed try using without the router or if no router run the optimzer download!

you may wanna kepp your 10 meg connection ;)

Never thought of the router limiting the speed. I've got a USR. Will have to take a look on the USR site for a bios upgrade maybe??

1280kb/sec!!! lol, bring back my 2400 modem from my Amiga days!!

The linksys WRT54GS works fine on my Ntl 10mbit. :)

Yes some routers do limit the speed as they only have a half duplex port on the back.

Well i've upgraded the bios on my USR8054 router and still no change, cant get more than 6.5mb/sec out of it.

So took it out of the equation and still only peaking in the mid 6mb/secs direct from cable modem to pc! (my pc network card is gigabit before anyone asks!) :-)

So could it my cable modem? Its one of the original SB4100 Sufrboards which i've had since they first brought out the broadband service. Is that capable of pulling 10mb speeds??
