Is this normal?? Weird speed test results
Are these results due to cacheing? Seems odd that only one is super high, but I get results like these quite often.
I'm supposed to be on 10Mb, but the "normal" results I get always come in under 2Mb THey're supposed to be doing network updates on my local exchange thing tonight, so I'll give it a few days, but just wanted to ask about these results. Thanks Muds Mon, 27 Mar 2006 20:06:55 GMT 1st 512K took 3016 ms = 169.8 KB/sec, approx 1399 Kbps, 1.37 Mbps 2nd 512K took 4656 ms = 110 KB/sec, approx 906 Kbps, 0.88 Mbps 3rd 512K took 156 ms = 3282.1 KB/sec, approx 27045 Kbps, 26.41 Mbps 4th 512K took 1672 ms = 306.2 KB/sec, approx 2523 Kbps, 2.46 Mbps Overall Average Speed = approx 7968 Kbps, 7.78 Mbps To repeat this test from the source server click here. |

Re: Is this normal?? Weird speed test results
what I normally do to see if my 10 meg is working okay is download something from a really fast server.
1 I normally use is :ftp://mirror.ac.uk/edunfs/mirrors/si...4/live-cd-9.2/ and just download the SUSE-Linux-9.2-LiveCD-64bit.iso file (611mb) but give it just a minute then cancel. I'm around the 0.99MB/sec and 1.04MB/sec. have to say that I find speed test sites are mostly unreliable sources really. |
Re: Is this normal?? Weird speed test results
Hmph
398MB/sec so I guess that's actually about 3 Meg (if I got the 8 the right way round) I shouldn't complain I guess - I used to be on the 2 meg, but the bottom dropped out of the connection a couple of weeks ago. I went to switch providers, and they offered my 2mb free for a year (no point as its still slow) or 10Mb half price. So I got 10Mb for cheaper than the 2Mb, even though I'm getting speeds nearer to the 2mb mark. It's more the principle of the thing.... My upload speed is fine, which is nice. thanks for the feedback muds |
Re: Is this normal?? Weird speed test results
errr no what your measuring there isnt correct Mud.... your are saying now that your connection is close to 4 GB not MB...... redo the download for a minute and look at what your speed is like

Re: Is this normal?? Weird speed test results
Sorry - fat fingers!
Should've said 398KB/s lol |
Re: Is this normal?? Weird speed test results
means your running on 3mb

Re: Is this normal?? Weird speed test results
I'd go with that too, except for the fact that NTL don't do 3Mb any more (or do they?) and my modem says the following:
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 10240000 Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 512000 so that's supposed to be 10Mb. I've read a good few other posts in other threads from people in my postcode area that have similar issues. I'll stick it out a bit longer and see where we get to Cheers again muds |
Re: Is this normal?? Weird speed test results
I'm fairly sure (waits for ignition to correct him) that cable broadband can be burstable.
i.e. It can suddenly send a huge amount of bandwidth through before its regulated by the ntl equipment (ubr/cmts?). |
Re: Is this normal?? Weird speed test results
Thats what they say but the modem client side still defines the maximum transmission rates.

Re: Is this normal?? Weird speed test results
change your sleep pattern so you use the net 4am to midday then you have a proper service :D

Re: Is this normal?? Weird speed test results
I use the web round the clock at various points of the week and it's always the same :(
(I get the NTL dig tho... :) ) |
