Changing my modem

Due to NTL technical support (Sounds like India or Pakistan or nearby) being absolutely horrific in their appreciation in my connection issue I have bought an Ntl home 250 modem from ebay.
It only cost me just over £5 so I thought it was worth a shot (consider I wasted MUCH more on the phone to ntl!). I guessed it'd not be a case of simply swapping them over, and sure enough there is an error (error 800).

Is it actually possible to change modem? Or do ntl link the modem to connection in some way?

Thanks in advance

You just bought an illegal modem that NTL will not support or activate against your account. The modem you are sent by NTL is linked against your account details and only registered modems will work.

Sweet.
hehe, NTL don't 'support' my current modem anyway...but I see what you mean.

Oh well, I'm screwed.

Nothing 'illegal' about it. We've already been down that route though - modem becomes customer's property when ntl choose not to collect it when the contract is up.

Course that's just my opinion. If they want them they should collect them. If I'm not paying rental for something anymore, the contract under which I'm paying rental is over, and the owner chooses not to ask for or take their property back it's mine. Again my opinion, nothing illegal about it ;)

Yeah I'd agree with that.

But I'm still unable to use this new modem aren't I?

Correct. Regardless of the legalities it's ntl's choice whether or not to let you use it, and I'm pretty sure in all cases they choose not to ;)

That would be the problem yes, have you tried asking a team member here to act on your behalf in contacting NTL to try and resolve your issue? May be easier than trying to get Indian CS members to deal with it.

Man alive, does any one actually know how to report these modems on eBay?

This comes up so often and I feel for the guys that have wasted thier money.

Could some one

a) let me / us know how to report these items on eBay

b) maybe we should check periodically and report them?

I just hate to hear about folks that waste / loose money on eBay, as it gives good sellers like myself a bad name.

Your thoughts?

I've got a few of them, now who would like to start the bidding? :)
