2 modems in one house...?
 

Hey guys, im new here so go easy :p

we currently have all 3 ntl: services installed, however, we have a building out side which i use as an office and this has been cabled up previously to recieve digital tv.

In the house, we have obvisouly have the stb and cm in the lounge. what i was wondering was, would it be possible to buy a new cable modem, and attach it to the previously installed point in the external building?

i.e 2 seperate cable modems connected the 2 seperate wall points.

if this was possible would

a) each cm have its own IP?
b) each cm have its own bandwidth?

just wondering thats all...

You would have to arrange and pay for a second BB account for that to work properly. You cannot buy a cable modem as NTL do not sell them and any you can get via Ebay are actually illegally chipped.

To obtain ntl services legally you have to subscribe to ntl and they will hire the necessary cable modem to you as part of the monthly cost.

Originally some customers did own their own modems, but this is now the exception rather than the norm. Occasionally one of these genuine private modems are sold, but that will be rare. Most modems you see on sites such as ebay will not be the sellers property and cannot be legally connected to the cable network.

Cable Forum will not permit discussion of any methods that could allow customers to acquire services that they are not paying for.

ntl will not usually provide more than one broadband connection to a property. You can however, use a broadband router to connect additional computers to your existing connection. See http://www.gyre.co.uk/help/broadband...on_sharing.php for more information.

Since you will be going outside, a wireless router would be required as you should not run standard network cable outside. Also, be careful not to buy an ADSL router, as these will not work with ntl.

There are several members on this site who have gotten NTL to install to Cable Modem broadband services in one house, it usually requires the start of a new contract however. The easiest way for your means would probably to be get a router (Wireless if the Out-building is within range) and if it isnt within range, bury a shielded CAT5 cable in trunking down the garden. (I wouldnt recommend Unshielded as it isn't as strongly built and is affected by interference)

Going down the 2-modem route will mean that you will be paying 2 Broadband bills but the device connected to each Modem will get its own IP and bandwidth.

Same questions for me as well.

My brother wants to get connected as well (i don't want him using my connection) i'm evil i know, but i was wondering if he'd be able to have a connection via stb or would he need an egineer to come out to sort it

same account or a new one ?

If you don't want to share bandwidth then your brother will need his own paid for account through NTL and they will get an engineer to fit a line and box for him.

Just to say that when I left NTL they didn't want the modem back, same with all my friends houses I think, if they simply provided a return evelope they could stop a supply of new modem that presumably also get hacked. Anyway I suppose its technically still not my property and i didn't take it from the house but still they are giving crooks the opportunity if this is their standard practice.

Not much expansion needed it's about a 5 minute job for most of the modems.

Very true and why I'm not too keen on people being called thieves because ntl can't be bothered to get their property back.

If ntl don't take it back and you aren't renting it from them and have no contract it becomes yours imo, though that's another discussion.

It's very easy on a forum for people to mistake the purpose of someone's post.My request for info. on "illegally" chipped modems was simply that.On the face of it I can't see the point of chipping a modem.If it's got a mac address and works what else do you need from it,or am I missing something?I never wanted anybody to tell me something which I could then use to advantage.HTH.

The modems that Paul is referring to aren't chipped in any way, they tend to just be modems that people have left over from when they left ntl.

There are as far as I'm aware no chipped modems as chipping is pointless, to steal service you'd still need to do some work at home, which is trivially easy. The only use for chipping modems is on Motorola modems where they are comprehsively reprogrammed with new firmware. The Ambits that ntl supply are nowhere near as hacked because there's no need.

Apart from the 250s which are somewhat more robust making the changes needed to the modem to steal service takes 5 minutes and a couple of quid of gear from Maplin's anyway.
