New IP address

Iv'e been with NTL for only 2 weeks and was curious to know if it's normal for NTL to give me a new IP address like they have done so soon. I also noticed that when i go here i'm using a proxy even when my browser is connected directly to the internet.Cheers in advance.

Re: New IP address

You can get a new IP at any point if NTL are doing any network segmentation etc so it's not unusual. As to proxies, NTL use transparent proxies for nearly all areas so you will be using a proxy of some sort unless you are extremely lucky or in an area where they were turned off.

Are there any advantages or disadvantages in using transparent proxies?

Re: New IP address

Speed to pull a page can be better but if the proxy fails or has"issues" then outdated pages can be pulled to the PC or it can actually slow the page load times right down or cause them to fail to load at all.

More info on NTL's proxies can be found on Robin Walkers page here.

I've not noticed much difference yet in page loading between NTL and my old ISP AOL so far.

Re: New IP address

AOL may have been using proxys too so you might not notice any difference unless the proxy you are using develops a problem.

The first day i joined NTL on the 7th March 2006 coincided with all those proxy problems and at first i didnt know what i was letting myself in for, but since then it's been ok.

Crikey, I'd forgotten about that. My Virgin ADSL was running like an old dog last night. Yet I did a speed test and got 475Kb d/s. Of course, Virgin.net is NTL and uses NTL proxies ... I feel a visit to Robin's alternative proxy list coming on ... :erm: :D

Oddly enough, the Virgin branding is very good at helping me forget I am a customer of NTL. Funny, that. :D
