Slow upload speeds

I am in the NTL Wessex area and am on their 1mb service. My download speeds are acceptable at around 120kb/s, but uploading I only get an average of 11kb/s.

What should I be expecting on the 1mb service? Surely more than that?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Slow upload speeds

The upload on 1Mb is 100kb/s - theoretically about 12kB/s, with overheads 11kB/s sounds about right.

Right, yes - thanks!

Easy to get confused between bits and bytes so 11kB (kilobytes) is I think 88kb (kilobits) which as you say is just short of the expected upload speed.

Thanks.

As a matter of interest (maybe to encourage me to upgrade some time as 100kb/s upload is slow if I am uploading video files) what are the upload speeds for the other NTL broadband options?

Re: Slow upload speeds

200k for the mid range tier (£24.99 a month)

and 512k for the top tier (£34.99 a month)

2MB/s is a 200kb/s upload

10MB/s is a 512kb/s upload

<edit> too slow :)

Thanks both! :)

So on that basis, does that compare well to the speeds of other providers at similar prices? i.e. Is 1MB at £17.99 and 2MB at £24.99 with those upload speeds competitive compared to others?

other suppliers are ADSL and that currently/usually comes with an upload rate of 256k although some ADSL low end products have lower uploads (which tend to be not advertised or hidden in the small print).

so the NTL 2meg product is comparible with normal ADSL for upload. the 1meg product has a poor upload rate.

and the 10meg product has an upload rate which most ADSL products dont/cant match and dont come anywhere near (yet).

Right - understood. Yes, I must admit, watching the upload of even smallish video files (around 20mb) is worse than watching paint dry.

Even the £24.99 NTL option is slower then compared to ADSL. Why do NTL lag over ADSL providers like that? Is it something to do with their technology or is it NTL just being NTL?

Yes, it could be fair to say that if I am serious about uploading video files I should be on their £34.99 per month service, but that is a lot to shell out every month. Maybe NTL will do catch up soon?

Are there any plans in the pipeline for NTL to do speed upgrades for customers on their existing package prices? If people are paying £34.99 for the 10MB service then I doubt it.

I don't pretend to understand, but as far as I know there is a limitation inherent in the technology of hfc cable networks. I believe it is to do with originally being designed for TV transmission, which doesn't need much bandwidth on the return path and as a result the network is liable to upstream congestion if too much of this limited bandwidth is used.

Whether any of the planned upgrades will address this, I don't know.

Re: Slow upload speeds

with cable/ntl compared to ADSL you get a lower upload speed unless you spend £25 upwards BUT you dont need a phone line for cable so you're getting something a lot of ADSL suppliers would love to have - naked broadband.

uploading this evening on NTL "luton/hitchin" area (not sure which node) at 30kB/s and it keeps crapping out every minute. rebooted both modem and router. it's been a while since i've uploaded anything and when you do you expect it to work. internet seems very "bursty".
