blueyonder, network, motorola
ok so basically i went to pc world a few weeks back and asked the man what i needed to set-up a wireless network, the assistant asked what SP(blueyonder) i was using and then picked up a belkin router and some other items.
When i got home the cable that fits the router wasn't the same type of cable coming out of my modem.(motorola surfboard SB4200 cable modem) so after days of no joy i sent the items back. after that i started reading about it some more. now please can someone tell me if this is correct, i can buy a adsl router and send my outside inet cable straight into the router, then i can fit network cards to both PCs and hey presto it should work, with no use of the modem?! i'd be delighted if somebody could give me some help regarding this. al |

:welcome: to Cable Forum :D
Do not use an ADSL router! ADSL and cable are different technologies. You need a standard broadband router with an ethernet based WAN port that can connect to the ethernet port of your blueyonder supplied cable modem. Telewest supply and maintain that modem. You supply the kit that forms your own network. ADSL routers combine the modem needed for broadband via the BT type phone line and the router. There is no place to connect the cable modem into an ADSL router. You cannot get broadband via cable without a cable modem i.e. your motorola Surfboard (or in some cases via the modem built into the Cable Television Set Top Box. You have no choice but to use the motorola and a separate broadband router if you wish to have a home wired and / or wireless network. |

The Linksys stuff seems to have a good following. Indeed I've just ahd a LAN party where my WRT54GS supported a connection for 20 PCs (don't tell ntl about the AUP limit of 3 PCs oops: ) |
