Files and settings transfer wizard--noob question

I'm running XPpro64 bit. Can I use 'files and settings transfer wizard' to back up everything onto another hard drive before re-installing windows-and then re-apply everything back onto the fresh win install.....or does it not work like that? :dunce:

However, I found this:

All your programs must be reinstalled on the new computer, because actual programs are not migrated by the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard.

Could I use Nero 7 to create a full backup (like ghost) on my other HDD and then transfer everything back over after the XP install?

When you install a program you get both files & registry entries.

The general idea is that if you migrate to a new system you install all the software you want on the new computer and use FAST to bring back the settings.

Try to restore from an old backup has the potential to cause chaos!

Hmmmm......okeydokey.
The reason I am asking is 'cos I want to either reinstall or repair xp pro 64 so that it recognises the dual core FX60. I can't figure out what command I would use in the xp repair console though.....

You don't use the 'repair console'. Boot from the CD, hit 'enter' to 'Setup Windows'. It will identify your current installation and you can 'Repair' that install. That should re-evaluate the hardware and load the new HAL/drivers.

A backup beforehand would still be good ;)

Yep, do what Aragorn suugests... you don't want the initial 'Repair' option, but on the next step, Windows will search for an previous installations of Windows and ask if you want to re-install over the top - this is what you want.

I've found in the past that it doesn't wipe out your Documents & Settings folders, but back 'em up just in case. From what I remember, the FaST thingy just copies stuff like My Documents, Favourites, cookies, desktop settings, etc...

What you could consider for future is to have Windows installed in its own partition and re-direct the Documents & Settings folder to another partition, and then whenever you need to re-install Windows, you know that it's only the Windows files that are gonna get wiped out. It's not perfect as anything installed in the non-Windows partition still won't work as the registry settings won't be there any more, but at least you can see what programs you had installed, as they'll still be present on the non-Windows partition, so you can manually re-install them.

Just for info... this is yet another case where Linux works better by design than Windows. As you don't have registry settings, you can easily have your OS stuff in one partition and your apps/games/other software installed elsewhere safe in the knowledge that you can mess up your OS as much as you like and everything will work straight away if you simply re-install.

...er, sorry I kinda got carried away there

Rammy dual boot to your spare drive as suggested before.See if it works then and only then mess with your os now.

Too late Zing :D
The repair didn't work, the cpu is still seen as a 'uniprocessor' not 'multiprcessor' :(

Rammie,

Have a look at this and this MS article about how to change / force multiproc HALs.
