nother slightly different NTL / Belkin router issue
 

I just bought an F5D7230-4 Belkin Wireless G router.

Ive followed the instructions to the letter wireing my main PC to the Router and then the router to the ethernet socket on the NTL modem.

The set up guide on the Belkin CD makes everything look fine and dandy untill it actualy gets to connecting to the internet. What ever I do, whatever order I reset the PC / modem / router, and however many times I run the 'easy-set-up' guide and follow the instructions again from scratch, I just cant get on the internet.

All the lights on the router are as they should be but the ethernet light on the NTL modem flashes very rapidly the whole time it is plugged in to the router. Rapidly as in probably about 10 times a second. Never seen that happen before and dont have a clue what it means.

If I hook the modem back up to my PC directly and reboot the PC and modem then Im on the internet again no problem. So the modems definately not completely broken.

I told the set up program that I had a dynamic IP which I think is right for NTL, and my PC is set to obtain an IP address automatically.

Any ideas?

it sounds like the ntl network isn't reregistering your account to the router's mac address. if I remember rightly the manual belkin send out is incorrect at some point regarding this and that's why you're having problems.

if there's an option to clone your pc's mac address onto the router do this - it will fool ntl into thinking your pc is trying to connect when it's really the router.

alternatively, if you cant do this shut it all down - wait 10 mins then power up router and see if the ntl network recognises you have put a new device on their network (ie. something with a diff mac address).

if you purchased it from pcworld I recommend taking it back and getting a linksys which is a far better product in my opinion. a lot of people have had 'issues' with belkin.

I think part of the problem is also timing

1. you turn it all off and wait a few mins.

2. you turn on your cable modem then you wait a min or so before

3. turning on the router.

I think if you get the time between 2 and 3 wrong then it dont work cos it doesnt do the mac address stuff right. if you turn on the router too quickly then the cable modem hasn't had enough time to link up with ntl so isn't in mac address seek mode.

Thanks for the tips - no luck though. I cloned the PC mac address to the router and again my PC finds a Local area connection but no internet. I switched the whole lot off for a good 10 minutes and then turned on the modem, waited 2 minutes, then turned on the router and PC. But no success.

I also tried switching the cables so the PC was connected directly to the modem and was on the internet fine, and then switching back to have the router in place without rebooting... I figured that being as its cloned the PCs mac address then it might have worked, but no.

The ethernet light just conitues flashing vigourously and theres no internet access.

Any more ideas?

Try releaseing your ip

1. Click the Start.

2. Click Run... on this menu.

3. type 'cmd' without the quotes and press enter

Type 'ipconfig /renew' to obtain a new IP address

Make sure the modem is pluged into the wan port of the router.

Im not sure whats going on, wether somehow its NTL's side doing something, or wether bascially Belkins specific products dont work with NTL as there are a LOT of problems with this, ive tried tons of things and nothing. Router is going back and getting a linksy i reckon

Yep, same here. After 2 online chat sessions with Belkins Customer support and then 2 phone calls with 'second level' technicians (probably means theyre slightly better at reading help tips of their monitors than the standard techies...) they eventually told me it must be broken.

Anyway. No more Belkin for me.

Ive just replaced the Belkin for a Linksys and Ive still got exacly the same issue. Its not a router problem.

Which model Linksys?

The newer WRTxxx models have built-in diags, so you can try doing a ping/tracert direct from the router.

Lol, Belkin stuff worked fine over ntl with me :-)

sounds like a faulty unit or a faulty cable though.

In the web based admin util, hit the 'administration' tab and then the 'diagnostics' page. You can try to ping / tracert to www.ntlworld.com from there.

The other thing to check (prob first) is the 'Status' tab, which should show what NTL IP is assigned - if any.

Can you confirm what LED's are lit on the front of the router & which ports on the back you have connected to what.

Ive got the modem plugged in to the router internet port, and my pc plugged in to the router '1' LAN port. All ethernet.

On the router the power light, wireless light, internet light, and '1' light are all on green and solid.

I wont be home till the wee hours of tomorow morning but I'll try the tracert / ping stuff then.
