Cannot Delete Folder

After those problems i had with the booting, i decided to reformat my system to factory state and everythings ok now. Onto my problem, i had the option for the recovery program to preserve all my files. I have put them all back in their correct locations, but cannot delete the folder that they came from. Windows XP even in Safe Mode says "Access Denied, make sure the disk is not full or write protected", how can i delete this folder, im literally going to go mad.

If you have the folder content displayed (even if it's empty) it won't let you delete it... try clicking on the folder above and then right click --> delete

Re: Cannot Delete Folder

say you have a folder
c:\this folder\that folder

to delete that folder go to and type in this command:
c:\this folder\>del that folder

so del is the command with the folder name

del folder_name

You may have an issue with permissions and ownership of the folder or files. Right click, assign yourself as the owner and auditor of the folder and all child folders, using advanced security properties. Make sure you have full administrator rights to the PC.

Realistically, in windows XP going to DOS to resolve file or folder rights and permission issues is unlikely to get you very far. As I recall, Windows XP no longer uses DOS as an underlying language. Thus when you call up the command Prompt window, or even boot to the C: prompt you are in fact running an emulation with much of the windoze software still affecting the DOS commands. Thus if there are file protection issues the DOS commands may not give you access.

I've always found that to resolve file and folder rights it's easier to do it in a dos window... MMMmmm each to their own I guess :)

edit - also note the difference between command and cmd to get a dos window....

After banging my head against the desk (only kidding) i got the recovery program to delete/re create the user partition and re install Windows. Anyway, after looking at the posts that you lot have made ill keep this in mind for future reference. :)

Go into the F10 recovery then Alt+D brings up a WinPE command prompt, boot up with a USB drive in your port and the program will detect that and set up.

ALL files are accessible, and can be copied to the USB, you may need to load Notepad to find out the revised drive letters.
