XP won't use router.
I have installed XP on a new router...
Now, when I boot it up, the wired link from the computer to the router comes on, but just before it finishes booting up it, the wired link goes out and Windows won't talk to the router. It gives me a 169.* ip, and fails to renew it. I know the router works and the adaptor, because if I put my old HD in it, it works.. The problem must be in XP somewhere... I have tried uninstalled the network card, and that didn't work... Any ideas guys? Many thanx in advance... |
Re: XP won't use router.
The cable?
Or possibly:- - the Network connection is disabled or the driver is corrupted - You have a GB NIC that cant autonegotiate down to 100BaseTX. I assume you're set to DHCP to the router. |
Re: XP won't use router.
what error does it fail with?
- Unable to contact DHCP or - An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket? Have you got sp2 installed? |

The cable and router are working fine, just tried it on with someone elses computer laptop the driver is showing as installed fine.. The network card works on the network with another install of Windows... but I'll look for a setting in there for that... Its something with windows, I am sure of it, its just really bugging me. |

Through trial and error, I suspected the network card, even though it works fine on another installation of windows, and windows installed it fine. I removed it, reinstalled windows, and used my ethernet-to-USB adaptor NTL so graciously sent to me, and it worked... First thing tomorrow, new network card, me thinks. Thanx anyway guys :) |
Re: XP won't use router.
May be that Windows is identifying the NIC incorrectly, punky, and installing the wrong driver.
You should be able get the right driver from the manufacturer's site. Make sure it's for the right card! ;-) |
