Is it me or...

Does it seem that over the past few weeks the service seems to be degrading from one area to another...
Are NTL just frigging around to make it look as though they have fixed one area, only to re-route the network congestion through to another area leaving it like this until the next mass customer complaints start...:monkey:

errr, conspiracy theory... :D

Maybe it's just as much to do with the P2P users that are now smashing the hell out of the network with their increased speeds. The infrastructure is obviously unstable at the moment but thanks to a certain area of the NTL BB user base the 10Mb lines are being thrashed constantly.

Re: Is it me or...

No, I don't believe it's down to P2P users at all. You can't blame it on these people all the time. That's just a scapegoat that a lot of people have had drummed into them. If that is the case why don't all other ISP's have the same problem...

Why? Because their network optimisation is better than NTL's that's why... NTL have overloaded their own network by trying to rush into the speed upgrades. Just ask anyone that's on Telewest if they have problems with their connections/speed. I bet not many do...

Not a problem for me on 1MB.But then all the leechers have gone to the 10MB so it's actually been very good recently.;)

You still share with them :) been on 1 meg its generally probably hard to see any fluctuations on that speed.

Who to blame for the problems? their are people who probably leave torrents running 24/7 but if they are on either of the bottom 2 tier's they are no longer breaching the TOS. If anyone I would blame the communication within the company, the rollout appears rushed based on market conditions of sky acquiring easynet and bt's maxdsl coming into play. Their was chaos in CS during the first 2 months and TS still are not troubleshooting the problems correctly, I am glad that so far they are holding of extending the rollout to the lower tiers.

You haven't been reading the Telewest section of this forum have you? ;)

To answer your original question no I don't think it's a conspiracy. Why look for a complicated conspiracy when good old fashioned incompetence is staring you in the face :)

Re: Is it me or...

hah I dont know who's network is actually better, I just go on what ignitions know how was and he seems to have some insight that telewest's network isnt in as good shape. Ntl using proxies in theory should have more free bandwidth for non http use and the cap on the top tier should in theory help, but this only helps if the bandwidth is provisioned on the same level as it would have been without these procedures in place otherwise their is no benefit to the customer.

Personally everyone I know on telewest has great speeds and 2 on ntl have problem's, but I know more people on ntl so it would be more likely to know someone who has problems.

Actually I was quite happy on my old 3MB line. It never used to give me any problems. I think you'll find that "my whinging" started earlier this year, when all the problems first started happening...

<removed>

There how about that for whinging....

I refer the honourable gentleman to exhibit a:

traceroute brhm-warw-ubr-1.inet.ntl.com
traceroute to brhm-warw-ubr-1.inet.ntl.com (62.253.190.97), 64 hops max, 44 byte packets

5 nth-bb-b-so-600-0.inet.ntl.com (62.253.184.1) 4.116 ms 3.868 ms 3.709 ms
6 lee-bb-a-so-600-0.inet.ntl.com (62.253.185.102) 7.023 ms 6.686 ms 16.301 ms
7 nth-bb-b-so-000-0.inet.ntl.com (62.253.185.101) 6.787 ms 6.561 ms 6.742 ms
8 nth-bb-a-ae0-0.inet.ntl.com (62.253.185.117) 7.384 ms 7.668 ms 7.232 ms

Now I'm sure that it'd be easier to just go nth-bb-b to nth-bb-a straight away rather than going to Leeds and back to bb-b and then to bb-a....

Exhibit b)

5 nth-bb-b-so-600-0.inet.ntl.com (62.253.184.1) 3.989 ms 3.570 ms 4.019 ms
6 lee-bb-a-so-600-0.inet.ntl.com (62.253.185.102) 6.925 ms 9.725 ms 6.975 ms
7 lee-bb-b-ae0-0.inet.ntl.com (62.253.187.186) 7.252 ms 6.868 ms 7.333 ms
8 man-bb-a-so-700-0.inet.ntl.com (62.253.185.193) 8.838 ms 8.130 ms 18.499 ms
9 man-bb-b-ae0-0.inet.ntl.com (62.253.187.178) 12.715 ms 9.289 ms 10.600 ms
10 win-bb-a-so-300-0.inet.ntl.com (62.253.185.138) 12.159 ms 10.715 ms 13.484 ms
11 winn-t2core-a-pos31.inet.ntl.com (62.253.184.114) 11.983 ms 11.104 ms 10.573 ms
12 rdng-t2cam1-a-ge-wan32.inet.ntl.com (62.253.121.26) 13.275 ms 12.643 ms 11.385 ms
13 rdng-rdng-ubr-1-ge10.inet.ntl.com (62.253.122.2) 12.734 ms * 10.578 ms

Now call me stupid but I'm sure from Telehouse there are better ways on the ntl network to get to Reading than via Northampton, Leeds and Manchester, such as possibly Brentford / Poplar (can't remember which) and Guildford...

No dynamic routing protocol would give routes that insane so without going into too much detail these look manually provisioned. Take an IP network and use MPLS (badly) to turn it into an ATM-style static path network. Good call guys.

Chrysalis 05-03-2006 21:58

Re: Is it me or...

yeah their appears to be manual routing, why would giganews -> ntl go over level3 in some areas when they directly peer with each other.

Ignition from what you knew when you was there is it possible their would be saturation by now if routing more directly and they may be routing around these choke points instead of upgrading them?

http://www.ntl-isp.ntl.com/ServiceStatus/

This could explain your problems and should always be the first place to check.

There is a link at the bottom of the page from CF to NTL Status
