A Nice Sense Of Priorities

Over the past few years there has been a disturbing (well, I find it disturbing) trend for various Americans to suggest that torture of terrorist suspects should be allowed. However, if this 'anything goes' attitude to tackling terrorism involves gun ownership, then the shutters go up.The new FBI powers to conduct extensive surveillance of terrorists grind to a halt if the suspect manages to successfully buy a gun. This is because NRA pressure has ensured that Justice Department rules would stop the FBI obtaining details of the purchase.

Amazing! A fair number of Americans would have no objection to their government employing torture but they object to the FBI finding out if a terrorist has bought a gun.

The USA is a land of contradictions like this, it's one of the reasons I find the place so fascinating ... if I'm lucky I'm gonna get my first visit over there next month!

But you're right, the NRA are particularly odd bunch, and the way in which they have spun the gun law issue so that it is in no way related to the need for an armed militia to face down potential British invasion is a piece of PR genius. ;)
