PCI Network Card & NTL ---Help
Hi there, realised a few days ago I need to buy a new router because my BEFSR41V2 can't handle the full 10MB.
so anyways can I just buy a network card and use my main pc as a router and also would this slow my main pc down? (2nd pc just used for web browsing) http://img107.imageshack.us/img107/6458/bntl5af.gif thanks for any advice, joe bloggs ;) |
Re: PCI Network Card & NTL ---Help
i have two network cards in my rig and run internet connection sharing to hook up both my xbox 360 and the gf laptop and have had no significant performace issues so i guess you would have few if any probs, but i'm no expert so i'll leave it to one of the other guys to give you the definative response.. oh and the other benefit of doing it this way for a small network is no messy port forwarding etc.. ;)

Re: PCI Network Card & NTL ---Help
I would get a router - can cost as little as £20.
You don't have to install software on the main pc (or use window's connection sharing thingy), and the main PC doesn't have to be turned on for the 2nd PC to be able to access the internet. I would always use a router, even if I only had one PC connected. The router is a firewall by definition, and so means one less thing to get wrong / install on the PC. Also then if you want to connect another PC (permanently or temporarily), is as easy as another cable into the router. |
Re: PCI Network Card & NTL ---Help
It's perfectly possible to do what you suggest in yuor diagram, however a router can be picked up cheap now and would be the best option.
As long as the router says 10/100 on it, it should be fine. In your set up, you would need to always have the main computer on to be able to use the other one. |
Re: PCI Network Card & NTL ---Help
Thanks for the replies, yeh i see what your saying with a router, it would be easier i guess.
As for network card, well the main pc doesnt go off & the 2nd pc only comes on the day... not only that, but I transfer files alot from the main pc to 2nd one so a network card would be cool. well thr netgear model, might buy one for £19.99, thanks for help |
Re: PCI Network Card & NTL ---Help
And a router allows your PCs to connect with each other as well as with the internet.
