Networking a Win 98SE PC
 

Have tried to see if this is already in Forum somewhere but failed..........

Have just set up a Wireless/Wired network into NTL (with thanks for help rec'd here in making the buying choice). So far have not done any of the wireless connections, just the wired ones, so have turned wireless off.

Two desktops on XP Pro wired up and working perfectly as far as Internet connection sharing. :cool: HURRAH!!
Have not tried to file/printer share yet as at this point in time being a network novice I don't know how to set this up and no time to read up (even if I have the info I need!!) :rolleyes:

More immediate problem tho is with an older third PC. I have wired this, adding a PCI Ethernet card as it had no connection. It's on Win 98SE which I cannot change due need to run some older software, and it was formerly only set up for dial up connection.

The E/Net card install seems OK, driver loaded OK and the device is registered and reports working properly in Device Manager.

Command line "pinging" the router from this PC gives replies back from the router in similar form to the two working PC's, e.g. I think it's connecting with the router OK. Router has a green light for this connection once the PC is booted, as with others.

However, Windows keeps reporting RPCSS "Illegal Operation" errors in module "unknown" (didn't before!), and progs like IE, Anti Virus updater, etc cannot find the Internet.

In case RPCSS had corrupted, I have extracted it from the Windows CD Cab's and reloaded it...no different................

Head, in over my.....rearrange please.......................... Help!!

It may not solve the problem, but you are going to need to ensure the dial up connection settings are all deleted. Check the network connections and delete anything there. In Internet explorer under options and connections make sure the dial this connection is disabled and it's set to find a connection automatically.

Have you tried running th setup on your XP machine and creating a internet settings disc for it? not sure if it will work but worth a try.

Basa, thanks for that, you know, I'd searched the MS knowledge base on rpcss and that one had not come up..........anyway, turned both keys off as per article, reboot, and still the same..........

I'll have to have a think re: settings disk..................surely the settings are buried all over the shop in normal MS style?? There's a level of fear factor here too, as I have two PC's working OK, and don't want to risk their operation!!

After working with Windows since v2 (yes, really!), I have yet to be forced into reloading Windows......but this time it's not looking good................is it?

You might have to resort to re-installing Windows.

Tip:

Copy your Win98SE CD to your HD in a folder named W98SE. Reboot to Command Line only. Navigate in DOS to the new W98SE folder type in 'Setup' and let it reinstall Win98 over your existing. You wont lose any data or settings. ;)

OK, have completely reloaded Windows (thanks for tip above).............and still no better.............

Internet seeking with AV Updater and IE cannot find any Internet connection, yet ipconfig shows correct IP address, subnet mask and router Gateway address. Pinging that Gateway address from a command prompt gets good replies.

Seems the connection hardware is OK, something I'm missing in the Windows software setup arena

MMMM, now that DOES seem useful...................if not solving this problem, it's explained why I had the fff file issue in the past on another PC.............. :-)
