MTU/Update Failed... xBox 360
Hi ppl!
I've got my 360 today, but can't connect the bleeder to Live!!! I am using NTL as my ISP, I have a BT Voyager 1500 Wireless Router (reliably informed that this IS Live compatable). I have purchased the official 360 Wireless Adapter. I have checked all the Wireless Settings on the 360 and they seem correct. I have checked the settings of the Router, and they seem to be fine. The problem I am getting is: When I try to connect to live to register, it says I need to download a mandatory update - I click ok, and it tries for a few seconds and says "Update Failed". When I check the Live Connection, it passes all the tests and fails on "MTU". Sometimes, however, when I run the tests it passes MTU, and then stops on the "xBox Live" test where it then prompts me to download the update! (Which fails as above).... xBox Live Support desk are no use - they just tell me to increase the MTU setting on my router which I can't do as there is no option to do this on my settings anywhere. I also don't really believe the problem has anything to do with MTU - I reckon this is a red herring - especially as the test passes ok sometimes... The Wireless Signal is on full bars (i.e. all 4/5 bars are usually lit) Any ideas gang?? |
Re: MTU/Update Failed... xBox 360
Definately sounds like a router problem, you are using an adsl router for a start do you have ntl's offnet adsl or an ntl cable modem?
first thing i'd do would be to remove the router from the equation and connect directly to the modem using a cable. |
Re: MTU/Update Failed... xBox 360
Yep the router is the wrong one for your use.

Re: MTU/Update Failed... xBox 360
I hear you... but can we just be sure of one thing... you're saying I'm using an ADSL router; but it *is* DSL - and in fact I did have the Voyager 2100 which *was* ADSL and specifically bought it back and replaced it for the 1500 as it didn't work with NTL (obviously... ADSL and DSL connections are *completely* different)... the following is from the BT Voyager Website...
"The BT Voyager 1500 is a state of the art Router combined with an IEEE 802.11g Wireless Networking Access Point. The Wireless Router plugs into your existing DSL or cable modem/router to add high-speed wireless to your Broadband connection." Also the wireless network in my house for my PDA and PC works fine! So why is it just the 360? The Cable Modem is built in to the Samsung NTL set-top Box that I have - I'll give plugging directly in to that a try tomorrow (though presumably I'd need to manually clone the "registered" MAC on to the 360 so it authenticates?)... however the set-top-box is not in the right room for the 360 - so one way or another, I need to get the frickin' wireless working |
Re: MTU/Update Failed... xBox 360
ADSL is a type of DSL, I dont understand why they call them DSL/Cable Routers. I've just checked out the specs of your router and it should work. Just one question, which port on the router is your connection from your NTL modem plugged into?

Re: MTU/Update Failed... xBox 360
Are you using a DTV Set Top Box for your BB connection or a stand alone cable modem?

I'm confused..... |
Re: MTU/Update Failed... xBox 360
He's getting his internet through his Samsung STB, he said so a few posts ago, and the specs of that BT Voyager confuse me too.

Re: MTU/Update Failed... xBox 360
Gents, (and Zeph my Poole comerade!)
My current set up for internet access is thus: Samsung STB is connected to Cable, and has inbuilt a cable modem. The Modem is connected via Ethernet output to the BT Voyager 1500 (RJ11 input I think it's called?) . The BT Voyager 1500 then beams the signal out to whatever wifi enabled device I want it to work with (in theory!) In order for this to work, I of course had to "Clone" the MAC code of the Laptop I *registered* with NTL on to the BT Voyager 1500 (so the STB thinks my router is the laptop I registered with and everyone's happy). So, my PC is connected fine, connection is Very Good @54 Mbps, I connect my wifi PDA to the network ok, my friends come around and connect their laptops ok... no worries. *however* the xbox is having trouble (and apparently my old housemate also couldn't get his regular xbox to connect to live either!). My 360 'sees' the SSID network, is connected to it, and has a great signal - but it doesn't seem to be able to connect to the 'internet' by the looks of things... My knowledge of wireless networks is pretty good, and I can't see anything obvious with the settings on my router - the only thing I don't have any idea about in the router config is "Protocols". At the moment the router is set on DHCP Client. Other options I have on the same page are: PPPoE Client and Manual. I'm wondering if this could be the problem - but I don't know what it means so I don't want to play around with it!! Does any of this info help you guys?? |
Re: MTU/Update Failed... xBox 360
Can you try it via an ethernet connection please?
|
Re: MTU/Update Failed... xBox 360
Also just a thought but try deleting your current setup from the provisioning and register your Router as a new device and then cloning the MAC Address to the XBox.

Re: MTU/Update Failed... xBox 360
Say what now?
Do you mean physically register the router with the NTL connection (rather than using a cloned MAC), and then clone the router's MAC on to the xBox? Would that not cause some kind of sharing violation? I'm still thinking it's got something to do with this PPPoE thing... On the Config Page it's laid out like this (but in "MAC Address" is the MAC of my old laptop): --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Internet/WAN Settings Operating Mode: Router [X] Access Point [ ] Protocol : DHCP Client [X] PPPoE Client [ ] Manual [ ] Mac Address ______________________ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If I change the button to "PPPoE Client" I get options for User Name (Which is a 9 digit number starting with a "4", and a password (which appears to be 5 digits), and it says "connection type - Always on or Dial on Demand". Manual gives me the option to manually assign all the IP's and Subnet Mask and DNS etc... Any of this ring any bells at all?? I'll be trying to connect the Ethernet directly tomorrow to see if that works... |

Re: MTU/Update Failed... xBox 360
I've tried a wired connection from the xbox 360 to the router, and that still fails on the "MTU" test.
In a way I'm sorta happy about that as it at least means the wireless adapter/network is 'ok'. The only things it could therefore be are: - The router's MTU really is not set high enough (which would mean it's not a red herring after all!) - My NTL connection doesn't support xBox Live? (I've got the 1MB service in the 3 for £30 offer - is it ok to use xBox Live over that connection?) If it's the former, I have a problem as there doesn't appear to be a way to adjust the MTU settings on the BT Voyager 1500. I have logged a query with BT Voyager Tech Support and they came back initially and said: "Open http://192.168.1.1 then click on Advanced. Click on Quick Setup. Log in with the admin details. Click on Next 3 times. Change mtu settings to required level. Click on Next again untill you can press finish" But my config page a) isn't //192.168.1.1 (it's //192.168.1.250) and b) I don't have a 'Quick Setup' option, and nowhere are there options for adjusting MTU (I think they cut and paste this solution from another model's). I've emailed them back and told them this and am waiting for a reply. If it's the latter problem - any suggestions? Neil; You've recommended I try directly wiring the 360 to the STB via Ethernet. I'll buy a CAT5 adapter/extension today and give that a go. Zeph; I'll try your suggestion of registering the router as a new device as well (I think it explains how to do that on the thread Neil posted earlier.... Thanks so far for the suggestions... finger's crossed(!) |

Can you check that if you have a MAC filter enabled on your wireless router that your 360s MAC is entered correctly, and if you have any security enabled (As you should do!) that the settings are entered into the 360s settings. PPPoE should be disabled. -Chris |
