wireless setup issues
 

Hi - I have a Dlink 624 router with a DLink DWL-AG530 PCI wireless card in my PC - I've set everything up, I can see my network yet cannot connect to it, however I can connect to my neighbours one fine - I called NTL and they say they do not support the router - is there anything obvious I've missed out as I can connect to someone elses network but not my own which I can see when scanning.

Can connect with wires through the router no problem.

Any help appreciated! (or anyone else has setup a wireless network with sucess with NTL?) Thanks

Jase, :welcome: to CF.

What OS & service pack are you running? XP SP2 is probably the easiest for wireless.
What error do you get when you try to connect? What does it say about your network in the 'available networks' list, eg 'Security Enabled Network'?
According to this guide, there is no wireless security on this router by default - have you set any? No security is fine for testing but you will want to beef it up!
You also might want to suggest you neighbour up's his security! There could also be an interference problem - his might be on the same or close channel as yours. Try resetting the wireless channel to 1 or 12 to see if that helps.

Does windows say it is connected and show a signal strength or not?

If it shows a good signal strength but you can't connect it could be mismatched security settings between the card and the router.

its Win XP service pack 2.

Which ever utility I use (Dlinks own or Microsofts wireless network scan tool) both see the NTL network, I've secured it and changed the channel numbers just in case (because I can see 2 other networks and thought there might be some inteferrance as you say)

I'm using WPA-PSK, configured on both the router + PCI card (I've only tried this because I tried without any security at all and it still wouldnt connect, so I thought I best secure it just in case!)

The exact error I get is when you try to select the wireless network to connect to, I get a message simply saying "Waiting for network" The signal is around 100% as I have the router + NTL modem right next to the PC, thought I'd set it up before moving stuff around.

The only other things that spring to mind (straw clutching!) are
Is MAC address filtering set up on the router? (Not a default setting)
Are there sufficient DHCP addresses available? (you could try forcing the card to a fixed IP in the routers address range)
Is you LAN card plugged in to the router when you try to connect? If so does disconnecting make a diff?
Finally, have you tried deinstalling the card, cleaning the drivers and reinstalling? (worked for me once!)
Other than those straws, doesn't sound like you've done much wrong!

nah MAC filtering isnt on, DHCP is, and is left on auto / dynamic.

Forcing the IP might be an idea - yeah my LAN card is connected via wires but I've also tried removing and get the same results both time.

I'll remove the card and try again and see what else happens, thanks!

Have you started up everything in the right order?

Turn it all off
1. Ntl modem on (wait till it boots)
2. Router on ( let it boot)
3. Wireless pc on.
