Connection Statistics - Take A Look Please...

Hi all, I'm with BT on 1MB. I want to upgrade to 3MB (or even 10MB on Telewest/NTL). I phoned up BT, gave 'em my details etc. and the max they said my line can handle is 1MB because of my distance from the exchange and I'm (at maximum) 5KM away from it which, to be honest I think is total bullsh*t because my friend lives a few houses behind me (makes him futher from the exchange) and hes on 2MB with NTL and he gets full speeds [I'll post his stats if you'd like to look at them]. Anyway, heres my stats;

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s
WAN PPPoE 5760976 8586220 0 6461 11681

Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1152 kbps 288 kbps
Line Attenuation 53 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 20 db 25 db

What's the max. you think I guys could get? Cheers :D

If your friend is getting ntl 2meg cable then its nothing to do with bt, it goes no where near bts exchange, if bt are telling you that you can not get >1meg then they are probably telling the truth as there are a lot of areas with bt that can not offer 1meg+ yet

As above, BT is nothing to do with NTL. NTL use their own fibre optic cables where as BT use the copper telephone wires. Due to using the wires you will find the further away from the exchange you go, the worse your speed will be.

Two completely different networks and technologies.

BT = ADSL via copper (all the way).
NTL = CABLE via Fibre to you local area, copper (coax I believe) for the last bit.

Cable (ntl) is not distance limited. Its not like changing power suppliers or something, its a completely different cable.
