Torrent Disconnections

;) Hi all.
1st post

While in browsing the net and downloaded files etc there isnt a problem. But soon as i start using torrents, the internet will just freeze up. No traffic in and out. The modem (Silver 200) has all the right lights on. So the only way to get the net back is to unplug the modem and plug it back in.

Can anyone shed light to why it does this and how (if possible) to fix it?

Thanks!

Make sure you do not saturate the upload bandwidth on your connection. Set it to maximum 50% of the maximum upload.

Ive got the upload set to around 50k max, (im on the 10mb service) and it still happens. Ive heard if i get the 250 modem it will be fixed, but calling ntl, asking for a fix, waiting for a tech...take agessssssss

50KB/s is almost the maximum from your 512Kbps upload. 20-30KB/s would be better.

The other day I was downloading and Id set my upload to 1KB/s, it was downloading around 8KB/s, as soon as I changed my upload to 6KB/s it shot straight up and maxed out my 2Mbps connection :D

Re: Torrent Disconnections

this is what I used which used 5kB upload and I had 10mbit down.

utorrent
global max up rate 5kB
global max down rate 0
net max half open 8
dht rate 4096
global max connections 150
max connected peers per torrent 75
number of upload slots per torrent 8 (under 1kB per slot but so what :))
max active downloads 5
enable scraping
enable dht
enable dht for new torrents

Have you reset the max TCP stack connections from 10 to 50?

use the app. from http://homepage.ntlworld.com/j.forrest101/TCP fixer/

also, if you are using a private site Disable DHT or you will be kicked off.

Re: Torrent Disconnections

you will only get kicked off a private site using DHT if you are using a client that does not handle it correctly, like certain versions of bitcomet, utorrent is fine.

Trust me, using DHT on most private sites will see you going elsewhere.

Whats DHT?

Distributed Hash Table

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distributed_hash_table

It is a method of getting more connections on a torrent, unfortunately it means that 'private site' torrents may be opened to none members.

Re: Torrent Disconnections

swoop101 also trust us you dont need to disable it in utorrent, when the private flag is enabled on the torrent it auto disables dht.

the 10 to 50 patch isnt needed if you set the correct settings, the 10 limit is for half open connections not established connections, I have mine set to 8 so it wouldnt even hit the limit.

many people have their torrent clients set far too agressive throwing away uneeded upstream bandwidth, and if they trying to do 20 to 30 connection attempts a second its no wonder they hit problems.
