Help with 192.xxx.xxx.xxx IP and linksys

Hi all.

I've just installed my first ever router (Linksys WRT54GS) and it's connected to 1 computer using the ethernet wire as i'm not ready to setup a wireless connection yet.

After running the setup cd the software says it can't connect to the internet, so i then click NO to save and exit the setup.

However my internet seems to work ok BUT i'm stuck with a 192.xxx.xxx.xxx IP which i understand is something to do with the internel IP the router has given me.

Should i be worried about this? as i've tried unplugging router, modem, running setup again several times and it still gives me this IP.

Can i fix it or do i just leave it as it is as everything seems to work and is upto speed?

Thanks in advance for your help. :)

Is the IP addy 192.168.1.x ? If so then this will be generated by the routers DCHP Server. So its ok.

You're supposed to have that IP (which should be 192.168.1.xxx)

You can change it, but that's a block reserved for Local Area Networks (LANs, like you have), so it would be against your best interests to change it.

There are sometimes when changing it would be useful (which is why the feature is there) but it doesn't sound like you need to.

So don't worry about it. Just memorise the IP, you'll be needing it a lot (accessing the router, other machines, port forwarding, etc.)
