connecting via Ethernet

Hi

Im trying to sort out my cable modem to connect to my computer via the ethernet rather than the USB port to get it networked wirelesssly.
But the broadband installer doesnt seem to want to let me do that. Ive tried it on mine and my sisters computer. It goes through the set up fine, until it comes to registering online, it doesnt work.
I have no connection to the internet. It says it failed to renew the DCHP thing as the error, but i do have "raw" connectivity, so its all plugged in ready to go, but doesnt want to do anything. Im wondering why this is?
It has to be something to do with the Ethernet connection as the USB works fine.

Also i have the connection dropping error that seems to be common now and will be calling for a technician to either fix it (if possible) or get a new modem box. Would the new modem box sort any of this out as im at a loss as why it wont work?

thank you

Re: connecting via Ethernet

Don't need the CD, the reason it isn't working is you haven't made the modem register the new connection (ethernet)
power off PC and modem
connect
power up modem
wait for lights to settle
power up pc
wait for things to settle
open browser.
