router's firmware upgrade

Hi all

Can anyone please put this into plain English :dozey: :dozey: :dozey:

Thanks

Have you upgraded your home router's firmware to the latest version available from the router manufacturer? Upgrading the firmware of the router and/or rebooting the router sometimes fixes the issue.

PS What is a router ?

Regards

Mike

Re: router's firmware upgrade

A router is a device used to share one internet connection between 2 or more computers.

The 'firmware' is the computer program running in the router - newer versions of this software are released, occasionally, to cure bugs, increase security or introduce new features.

The main thing to be wary of is that any firmware upgrade MUST be correct for the particular make & model of router. The manufacturers website will have instructions for how to perform the upgrade.

So being a single user at home I do not have a router ?

If you only have an NTL or Telewest supplied modem or set top box & nothing else, then no.

However some ADSL modems have a router built in.

There is nothing to stop a single user having a router, if it does NAT it will act as a hardware firewall, for example.

Does you NTL cable go into a cable modem and then from the cable modem you have an ethernet cable (RJ45's) OR USB cable going into your PC??
