Linksys Wireless G Broadband Router
 

Hi Everyone, Remember me....? I got a Linksys WRT54G and successfully installed it. Only problem was I couldn't get online!. I phoned the good chaps at NTL Technical Services twice and thought we had resolved any issues. The last phone call to NTL (Sam) sent through th process of pinging the router and had not problems, but when we went to ping Ntlworld, we got absolutely nothing. The line has been checked twice, IP addresses checked etc. Anyone with any ideas what has happened and how can I rectify the problem? I've not a wireless adapter for the second PC to install after this is sorted.:(

The WRT54G is usually pretty good.

Assuming NTL use the same sort of modems as Telewest, it's possible the modem still has the PC's MAC address buried inside it? Have you been through a full powercycle of the router, PC, modem etc?

Does the basic status page on the router (I use third party firmware on my WRT54G so couldn't tell you where th Linksys page is) say you're connected or not?

Not sure where the status page is either. But when pinged it responded 4 times so I don't think there is a problem there. Its the link between the router and the iexplorer.

Go to the Status section along the top of your routers config screen.
Make sure you have a valid IP address and default gateway and than DNS1 and DNS2 have entries. Also check that the MTU is set at 1500.

Are you connected over wireless to the router whislt trying to debug this fault? ie do you know the fault is with the line/modem/router/wireless/computer blah blah.

Can you plug into your router via cable to see if this helps?

There are so many things that could be at fault and the best way to start it is try and eliminate as many possible bridges as you can.

Coz I couldn't get a response with the router connected to the NLT stb, I had to disconnect it and reconnect just using the cable to stb. This is how I am now online. The problem I have is that we have checked the network cable - it is ok. We've checked the router and that is ok, but the two together are not working sufficiently for me to get online through ie. It seems to be a very simple procedure to connect up and I did get the "connection has been successful" so why does it not connect to ie.

if you are using a set top box, you will have to either register the router with ntl, or clone the mac address of the pc onto the router. Have you done either of these things?

If not, connect the router back in and powercycle everything. Then try browsing to http://start.ntl and following the process through.

If you can't get to that page, go to the routers config page (which btw is http://192.168.1.1/ ) and check what ip address the router is getting. Does it start 10, 169, or something else?

Thanks Chris, I had registered the router with NTL (on the first phone call becaue I couldn't do it online) and the IP address was 192.168.1.1 through DHCP. There was also DNS 172.16.30.xx, so everything was looking OK but didn't work. So I had to undo the router and reset the cable direct from stb re register and here we are, online.

urm... the only way to register the router is to do it when it is connected, so it wasn't done on the phone call. The DNS of 172 suggests that the router isn't registered, so try the http://start.ntl/ thing again next time you connect up.

When you have finished the registration you will need to reboot the stb and router, then you should be online.

Chris, Thanks for your message, went out for an hour as I was quite perplexed over this issue. I have now started from scratch and for whatever reason its working now. Fingers crossed nothing else happens. Nothing is as easy as it says on the box, I have become to learn that the hard way. Thanks to everyone who posted on this thread. I've now to make the PC 2 "Wireless accessable". Wish me luck. ;) ;)

PS: Did I read somewhere that routers can be affected by mobile phones, wireless keyboards and mouse? Is there any other tips to forward on to me.
