Router problem - Linksys WRK54G
Every now and again at random (could happen twice within 2-3 days or once a fortnight) the internet connection stops - no web, no email no nothing. All lights on the router don't change. If I power cycle the router then everything is OK again - until next time.
Any ideas anyone? Router: Linksys WRK54G Cable Modem: Motorola SB4100 NTL Broadband: 2mb. I am not using the router's wireless connection - just the wired ports. |
Re: Router problem - Linksys WRK54G
There have been various threads discusing similar problems.
It could be caused by cordless phones, microwaves (which use the same frequency) |
Re: Router problem - Linksys WRK54G
I get a similar problem with my WRT54gc if I try to do a tracert from DOS. No solution to it yet (haven't spoken to Linksys about it yet - not a serious problem).
Is probably related to some specific thing you do / your computer does. If it is the computer, not easy to find out what it is (could be antivirus update, Windows Update, etc). Check you have latest firmware, and try looking on the forums at www.linksysinfo.org. |

It's a tad confusing. There are 2 versions of this model of router. I can't tell whether I have the 1.0 or the 1.1 version of the router from either the admin setup pages or from the labels on the router. On linksys.com..... The latest firmware for the 1.1 router is dated 23/12/2003 version 1.58.03. The latest firmware for the 1.0 router is dated 25/5/2004 version 1.55.02. There are no other versions for download. According to the router admin setup I have firmware 1.56.01 dated Jul 22 2004 which seems to contracdict above version numbers and dates (unless there is a UK specific version that they are not letting on about). |
Re: Router problem - Linksys WRK54G
I have found that the WRK54G is susceptable to none functionality due to power fluctuations. Short term interruptions enough to cause the house lights to flicker but not long enough to cause computer equipment to reset or shutdown. Even though everything appears to function normally when inspecting the front panel LED's and even checking all the settings via the browser shows no issue.
Powering the unit on and off leaving for several minutes had no effect. Pressing the reset button had no effect. Completely disconnecting and reconnecting as recommended had no effect. Running the setup disk and going through the process but changing nothing resolved the problem! |
Re: Router problem - Linksys WRK54G
The WRK54G should never be bought IMO, caused many problems with dropping connections, overheating in one case and generally not being a great router at all.
I had one, had me tearing my hiar out for a week or so until i realised it was just the router making problems, not the wireless clients. They aren't very reliable at all. I've said it once, and i'll say it again, steer clear of the WRK54G, and do buy the WRT54G. |
