Is This Possible?

In theory the NTL network is just one large chain of switches and cables, correct me if I am wrong.

Say my friends lives in town G and my other one lives in town S and they want to network their computers through NTL would it be possible? They both have NTL as their internet connection obviously.

Is it just a case of setting all the IP's so everything talks or is there more to it?

Just curious as to weather it would work or not, hope someone answer this.

what would be the aim? you can network via peer to peer or ftp anyway your major restriction would be upload speeds. In theory the pcs are connected to the same network anyway the WWW

The aim to connect two pcs miles away and gain a standard network connection i.e. 100Mbs or 10Mbs depending on NIC.

What do you mean by "network them" ?

If you mean windows file shares then no, the ports are blocked on the cable modems (which you can overcome with various types of port mapping/forwarding software).

You're also restricted by the speed of the cable modem connection, so no, 100Mbps is out.

And restricted by the upload speed of each system so maximum is less than 512 Kbps.

What you need is a router at each end that supports something called VPN (Virtual Private Networking). This will map all the normal Windows networking stuff over the network using another port. It works fine but is a bit slow.

Some more details here:
