More newbie wireless networking help

I bought this router from dabs with a buffalo wireless card. Have set the wired part up ok, have 2 computers connected to it, cable modem (NTL) is plugged into the modem and works fine on both. Setting up the wireless part however is causing a bit of a headache! Followed the router instruction for the security part, installed the cd stuff and plugged the card in, the laptop finds the card but doesnt seem to be detecting a signal from the router. The signal strength shows a red circle with a line through it. I have wireless radio turned on at the router, the router is next to my subwoofer, would this affect it? Any help would be appreciated before I rip all my hair out

Laptop is running 98SE! card model is Buffalo WLI2-CB-G54L

:welcome: to Cable Forum :D

It's unlikely that if you are initially setting up the wireless on the laptop, whilst sitting close to the router that interference would completely block a signal. Yes you may have a problem if you then move away from the router's location. The best place for a router is high, rather than low, so if you can get it on a shelf that would be better.

As for getting the connection set up, try initially without any security enabled. See if you get that runing and then modify it to add the security layers.

Thanks for your swift reply!

I would like to put it higher but the cable supplied with the router isn't overly generous! It's about 2 inches long! so the router is sat next to the modem atm!

It seems weird that it's getting no signal at all, i turned the security off this morning, I also changed the channel, makes no difference, the signal strength on the laptop still shows the red circle with the line through it. The wireless light on the router is on and the aerial is screwed in tightly. i've been looking high and low all day for someone I know with a working laptop with wireless card, or a working wireless network that I can test either product on, with no luck :(

To set up any wireless network I would first use a cable connection, to setup the SSID & security (see sig for a link to help set up security)

Re: More newbie wireless networking help

The client manager utility i have is scanning for connections to connect to, i assumed that would set the ssid! As the laptop is here, manually entering details is no problem, i've tried that though, it doesn't find the router.
