i have a router to share my internet and have file sharing set up when i open my network places i can see my two icons one for desktop and one for laptop when i cliick laptop it will not let me acsses it from my desktop says acsess is denied contact admin i have run the network wizzard on both machines and even connected both pcs directly with a crossover cable still no result if i change my laptop name to another my desktop sees the name change but still wont let me acsses it i also have shortcuts on both machines which sill give me acsses tho the shared folder on my network but can not see them in my network places

Do you actually have any folders shared on either PC, or have you just run the wizard.

look at the drive in windows explorer and shared folders will have a different icon to the non shared ones. Even if there are shares, you may need to check the sharing rights (right click on the folder).

yes they are on the same workgroup

yes i do have shared folders on both pcs and as quoted i already have shortcuts on both pcs whichi have acsses to but can not acsses the pc on the workgroup in my network places (see pic)
and i have tried it withe the fire walls disabled and with them unistalled

i stand t be corrected on this but do the user accounts on both machines have passwords.....sure i read something a while back that both accounts on both pc's need to have passwords.

also if your coming out of a router i think im correct in thinking you need a patch lead and not a crossover lead

thought a crossover lead was used to link 2 pc's together and patch leads used on routers
but im sure someone will correct me if im wrong doh lolo

That's the usual setup, patch for router to PC or crossover for PC to PC connections. The OP was stating a crossover when directly connecting the two PCs without a router though.
Think we need to know more about your setups on the PCs, how did you setup the file sharing, are there any files in the folders, what have you named the computers on the network, what type of account are you running on both PCs.

Your cabling is fine. (you can see the laptop!)

You need a named account on each machine which is the same.

EXAMPLE:
PC - user named "Fred" with no password
LAPTOP - user named "Fred" with no password

Log on to PC as "Fred" and share whichever folders you require.
Log on to LAPTOP as "Fred" and share whichever folders you require.

You can now lof on as "Fred" on either machine and access the shares.

as stated both pcs have the same name with no password and the same workgroup name and there is files that are being shared as stated in prev post as i can still acsses them on the shortcut

running xp with workgroup name home 22 on both pcs laptop is named laptop desktop is named desktop loged on both pcs with the same name and with admin rights

Are these XP home ?

If so, there could be a couple of problems.

1. You may have to give both accounts a password (which obviously will need to be the same).

2. When you connect from one pc to the other you may need to specify the username as [destination-pc-name]\[username] - as I'm not sure that XP home supports NT passthrough authentication (meaning that simply being logged into both with the same username and password may not work).

yes it is xp home this is wierd as it used to work ok the stopped i can share a file on my desktop and i can see it on my laptop insantly but if i do the same on my laptop nothing happens on my desktop but i still canot acsses my pc icons in my network places (seepic)
