Ethernet Card Problems

Hello everyone,

When I got up this morning, my broadband didn't work. After a lengthy call to NTL when my ethernet card wouldn't realease my IP address, the guy said that my ethernet card is probably knackered.

Is this likely to be true? My ethernet card is built into my motherboard and it's a barebone system so I don't have a lot of room for another. Can I get it fixed? Is there likely to be any other explanantion?

Working through USB now, which appears to be slower.

Any ideas appreciated
Thanks all

Re: Ethernet Card Problems

I have managed to kill a network card before now - but only because I found I'd wired a lead up wrongly :dunce: the point is that it is possible to do and any electronic component can die.

The ntl guy may have suggested this already. Unplug the ethernet / USB cables. Boot into safe mode. then into hardware device manager (windows contorl panel > system) and delete the network card. Now reboot the computer which should prompt a message ater the logon screen (or when the desktop appears) of new device found, and reload the network driver - try to make sure you have the current one (download that now from the internet).
Power off the modem (or STB) and the PC, connect the ethernet cables, reboot the modem/STB and then the PC.

Network cards are cheap if it has died, but if you don't have a spare expansion port

aha! thankyou! The ethernet cable now seems to work and I have a new IP address.

My router however, doesn't seem to like it. Is NTL a DHCP, Static IP, PPPoE, or PPTP service?

Please don't tell me what they all mean! My head may explode
