Re: Please explain.

Your download speeds and upload speeds are different. Upload on downestic broadband has always been much much slower. It's the same for cable and ADSL phone lines (the A in ADSL actually standing for Assymetric) You have to got to a leased line, or the gereally superceeded ISDN lines to find balanced upload and download speeds.

The residential companies have always headlined their download speed, as that's the big number attraction. For most people that is the speed of most concern as ti's how long to get a file onto their PC.

Oddly its quite hard to find the ntl download to upload speed comparisons.

Look at what the download test and what the box telling you the speed you're downloading a file at show again, Wod.

You'll see that the download speed is expressed as 756Kbps - that's kilobits per second, whereas the file download is expressed as KBps - Kilobytes per second.

just to follow on from patrickp...

8 BITS in a BYTE

756 divided by 8 = 94.5 (nearer to your figure you were quoting)

10meg broadband means 10megaBITS per second. max download speed will be 10/8 = 1.25megaBYTES per second

As well as dividing by 8, you also lose about another 3% in protocol overheads.

Also, ntl 10meg is not actually 10meg - it's 9.76 meg :)

technically speking it's over 10meg, as we're counting in kibibytes not kilobytes (1024 = kibi 1000=kilo)

Re: Please explain.

ever thought that might be the fastest the site will allow???

ie - My top upload speed is 30k/sec, which meens that anyone downloading from me will get a maximum of 30k/sec

Hope this helps??
