Apple Mac wireless setup
hi all :)
i'm a total newbie to the wireless network malarkey, i've just purchased a Negtear WGR614UK [v6] wireless router and a Asus WL-167G usb2 adaptor for use with my Apple Mac G4 desktop. I i'm with NTL and have the 200 silver modem. anyone give me some pointers? i've installed my drivers for the Asus adaptor and as soon as i get home i'm gonna attempt to set the network up and get rid of my 20 metre ethernet cable :wavey: TIA |
Re: Apple Mac wireless setup
:welcome: to the site.
Generally, I have found the Mac to be easy to set up for wireless networking, but, I have only used the Airport card on a iBook G3 and the built in wireless networking on my Mac Mini. Hopefully it should all just work. When you know it's working, I would advise you to secure it. Have a look at http://www.cableforum.co.uk/forum/article.php?a=12 for basic info. |

Re: Apple Mac wireless setup
right i'm here on my wireless network.. woo hoo.. just need to secure the connection and i'm cooking with gas!
just a note if anyone buys a Asus WL-167G USB2 Adaptor, you may need to remove the adaptor if you shut your mac down and the re-insert it once you've restarted as mine will not see it unless you do so.. other than that it was a doddle to install: install asus drivers and utility connect Netgear router to modem and a ethernet cable from the router to my mac, connect to netgear set up wizard and change your settings as required, unplug ethernet cable from the mac and then you're wireless :) i'm still getting my head around security though.. i'll report back on that, my head is swimming with MAC filtering and WEP stuff.. hehe cheers |
Re: Apple Mac wireless setup
right i'm all secure, my Mac G4, PSP, NintendoDS and Asus adaptor are the only mac addresses my router will allow to connect to t'internet and i've got 128bit encryption going with a WEP key!...
jobs a good un' :D |
Re: Apple Mac wireless setup
I'd go for WPA if your router and the other devices can handle it. WEP can be cracked.
