If I have an old modem which I own...

And have the 10 meg service, can I ask NTL to give me a new one which I am now paying to rent (Since I have never infact been given a modem by NTL).

The modem I have is a 3COM CMX, and It doesnt manage 10 meg, usually more around 6.5 meg and no more.

Am I perhaps being too picky here? I read that others have problems getting 10 Meg but im sure a modem this old must have problems..

Cheers

From what I understand, NTL provide the service and the modem. As such they won't allow you to use your own modem, as it would invalidate any service contract you have with them.

NTL however should provide equipment sufficient for the service you pay for. How come you have never been given a modem, are you on a STB or something?

NTL used to give a reduction if you had your own modem.

When I joined NTL I was given the option to buy my own or rent I chose rent as the cost of the modem at the time equated to 3 years rental.£5 a month rental it used to be

Re: If I have an old modem which I own...

I bought my modem for use with NTL's network quite some time ago, for a £5 saving on the charge of (I believe) £50 a month for 512k.

After some time, this went down to £20 pm, including the £5 discount, while others were paying £25 and NTL gave them a modem.

Following the upgrade to 1Mb, NTL decided to drop the discount for owners of modems, and so i have been paying the same as someone who didnt have their own modem, and was given one by NTL.

This has never been an issue till the 10 meg upgrade, where my modem is, I believe, somewhat lacking since it is rather old.

Hope thats cleared it up :)

I owned my own modem and got a discount until july last year. When they started charging me rent I called them asked for the modem they were now charging me for. I got pushed around a few various departments but eventually an engineer delivered one.
