please help with wireless router

please help as i have to have this done by the morning.

my setup is: cable comes from outside into the house and is plugged into my motorola modem which is then connected to my pc (usb). i have then connected a cable from my modem to a linksys wireless G broadband router WRT54GS. i can connect to the internet fine.
i want to use my laptop down stairs to go on the internet and have got a linksys wireless G usb network adapter but i cannot get the laptop to connect to the internet.
can someone please tell me how to configure the router and laptop so i can connect. (i'm doing this as a favour for my mum and brother).

Thanks in advance

Re: please help with wireless router

Only one Connection will work at a Time (USB/Ethernet) and a reboot is required between switch.

As Zeph says, you need to unplug the USB wires. You must alsow switch off the power to the modem, router and and computers. Then you can connect the ethernet cable between the router and the modem. Now connect the ethernet cable between the router and any computers, or alternatively use wireless. Only once you have changed the connections over (and the modem has been off for a few minutes), should you power on the modem, let that settle down, then power on the router, let that settle, and finally power on any computers.

It can be easier to establish a connection and setup initially between the modem > router > computer by using all ethernet setup, before swapping from ethernet to wirless between the router and computer(s).
